  1. What is a Natural Resource? • A natural resource is something that is found in nature such as air, wind, sunlight, soil, mineral deposits, animals, plants, forests, or water.

  2. Do we need Natural Resources? • YES! • Why? • To survive! • Why else do we need natural resources? • For employment!

  3. What is Sustainability? • The power to endure or survive. • We are consuming resources at a rate that is so fast nature cannot replace the supply. Our habits are polluting the air, water, and land. If we are not careful, our actions will destroy the very resources we need to survive. Our current way of life is not sustainable.

  4. What is Stewardship? • Being responsible for something of importance. • An environmental steward conserves natural resources, protects the environment from harm, restores habitats, and promotes the importance of stewardship to others. Stewardship will help to make Earth’s natural resources sustainable for future generations.

  5. Some environmental issues

  6. Your assignment…Working in your group, choose an environmental issue to research, and create a presentation.

  7. The purpose of your project is to bring about awareness of your environmental issue.

  8. Your research headings… • Definition: Describe the environmental issue. For example, what is acid rain, clear cutting, or overfishing? • Causes: Explain what has caused or created the problem. For example, what produces acid rain? Why do loggers clear cut trees? What releases emissions? • Effects: Describe TWO negative effects of the environmental issue. For example, how does it harm human health, plant life, wildlife, air, water quality, or jobs?

  9. Your research headings (con’t.)… • Solutions: Describe TWO solutions to prevent, minimize, or reverse the harmful effects. For example, scrubbers can be installed in factories to reduce toxins that cause acid rain, selective cutting can be used as an alternative logging method, or biofuel can be used in cars to reduce harmful emissions. • Interesting Facts: List TWO facts that you think that people will find interesting. Select facts that are shocking, fascinating, or are not well-known.

  10. Your research headings (con’t.)… • Sources: List the websites used to find facts (minimum of 4 sources).
