  1. Holding a Grudge

  2. Holding a Grudge • The Bible tells us not to have grudges rather forgive and forget. • “You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” (Lev 19:18) • “Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned:” (James 5:9) • “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.” (Rom 12:17) • “See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.” (1 Thess 5:15) • “not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:9)

  3. Holding a Grudge • The Bible tells us not to have grudges rather forgive and forget. • 'Thus says the Lord God:"Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred," • therefore thus says the Lord God:"I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the remnant of the seacoast. • I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I lay My vengeance upon them." (Ezek 25:15-17)

  4. Holding a Grudge • The Bible tells us not to have grudges rather forgive and forget. • 1 Pet. 2:1 – all in the list can be applied to grudge holders • We are to forgive as God has forgiven. • Col. 3:13; Lk. 17:3-4; Matt. 18:21 • What about forgetting? • Heb. 8:12

  5. Holding a Grudge • The Harmful Effects of a Grudge • Cain and Abel – Gen. 4; 1 Jn. 3:12 • The Root of Bitterness – Heb. 12:14-15 • Absalom – 2 Sam. 13:22-23, 32 • “Destructive anger and bitter hatred….Both of these are caustic emotions and having them within us is like having sulfuric acid in a wooden bucket. At first it will hold the dangerous liquid safely within, but as time passes the caustic solution will eat away its container and destroy it. Likewise with destructive emotions we can hold them for a time but in the end they will destroy us. Have you ever known a happy person who was consumed with anger?” (Dan King, Searching for Happiness?)

  6. Holding a Grudge • A Grudge can be defeated by Love • Jacob and Easu – Gen. 27:41-44; 32:6-19; 33:1-5 • "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; (Matt 5:43-45) • This was expressed in the OT – Ex. 23:4-5 • Joseph and his brothers – Gen. 50:15-21 • Jesus and Stephen had the forgiving spirit.

  7. Holding a Grudge • Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love (Rom. 12:10)
