  8. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? Students are different – TABE levels, learning styles, work schedules, childcare needs One size does not fit all – we can not teach them all the same A lecture / chalkboard approach will not produce the results we desire with tech savvy students
  9. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? If we keep doing what we’ve been doing, we will get the same results – INSANITY Distance Learning can help bring our programs into the 21st century
  10. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? By nature GED students want to be in class as brief as possible They have barriers that prevent them from attending a traditional face to face class Job schedule not flexible Single parent Lack of transportation or child care Distance Learning helps remove these barriers
  11. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? By providing DL students can see themselves obtain their GED, and enter college / workforce A poll of students showed that the majority enter our program to have better job opportunities DL is a bridge that can help
  12. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? Distance Learning (DL) enables students to prepare for the GED Test more rapidly causing them to enter the workforce sooner than if in traditional classes Incorporates real-life situations into interactive learning that teaches academics and job skills DL helps students set realistic goals (short and long term) and to see steps needed to transition from AE into workforce
  13. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? DL makes students more marketable in the workforce – PC skills DL students have great soft skills that employers seek: Self-regulation– able to overcome distractions and stay focused Social skill – managing in person and online relationships with students and teachers to move towards obtaining GED and entering the workforce Motivation– driven to achieve
  14. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? DL helps students be confident to compete in the workforce because they are able to take ownership of their learning and see tangible results They enter the workforce knowing the odds are not against them because they have a GED They have experience succeeding at something when others have gave up on them which causes them to know they will succeed in the workforce
  15. What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system? Success Story Anthony – Self employed barber, 4 children…aspiring doctor! Former face to face now DL only – progress test results all ASE levels…GED ready!

  24. What does an adult education system built for student learning look like and why? The purpose of this portion of the presentation is to provide a hands-on demonstration of how a distance learning course can provide personalized instruction based on the concepts of pre-assessment, guided instruction, practice, and post-assessment. Merriam (2010) stated “the internet is an important learning resource” (p. 127). The web-based course involved in this demonstration is being used as a learning resource for ABE/GED/ESL students at Lone Star College. The demonstration will focus on the four concepts mentioned above: pre-assessment, guided instruction, practice, and post-assessment.

  27. Research-Based Conclusions Adult learners are interested in learning what they need to know (Merriam, 2010). By pre-testing the student, we are able to determine what they need to learn. The guided instruction activity provides the learner with step-by-step instructions which enables the student to learn the concept “they need to know”. Adult learners prefer meaningful instruction that meets their individual academic needs (Merriam, 2010, p. 127). The practice assignment allows the student to demonstrate what they have learned. Practicing an instructional lesson in an engaging manner is relative to the how adults learn (Merriam, 2010). The post-assessment allows the instructor to assess what the student has learned and retained. The post-test will determine if the student can move on to the next module or if the student will need more instruction and/or practice.
