  4. Routers and Serial Connections • Routers separate networks • Local networks are normally connected to WAN via routers • Two end of communications • One DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) • One DCE (Data Communication Equipment) • Generate signal clocking

  5. DTE and DCE • When router is connected to a service provider, or a device of like CSU/ DSU (Channel/ Data Service Unit) • Service end provides clocking • Router is a DTE and needs DTE cable • Most common scenario • But in some cases routers can also act as a DCE.
