  3. GRABBER Grabber’s Job: Get the reader’s attention! Try one of the following: •Dramatic Description •Surprising Statement •Amazing Action •Stunning Statistic •Fantastic Fact Sensational simile or metaphor

  4. GRABBER EXAMPLES Junk food is a disease that is spreading like a wild fire amongst teens at school. Seventy-five percent of eighth graders admitted to eating only snacks for lunch and never exercising.

  5. Background Info Background Info has 3 different jobs: –State the topic of the essay –Explain why the topic is important –Use a persuasive technique to convince reader(s)

  6. Background Information State topic: – Serving junk food at school is a sure way to direct students down the wrong path of eating healthy. Explain importance: –Eating healthy at school will keep students energized and focused on the intense work load of the school day. Persuasive technique: -If they only eat junk food then they are sure to have a school day that leaves them like a lump on a log.

  11. Explain Argument When students eat unhealthy foods like chips, soda or candy, it can cause their body to slow down and make them feel tired and less focused in class.

  12. Example/Elaboration For example, a friend in 6th grade drank two sodas at lunch on a dare. At first he was energetic and ran outside at full speed, but once we got back into the classroom, he crashed and fell asleep. Shocking his body with sugar may have given him energy at first but so much sugar intake is not healthy for the body.

  13. Counter-argument Some people would say that the sugar in junk food is good for your body. I agree that sugar is good for your body but not in the large amounts that it comes in for junk food.

  14. Concluding Sentence Junk food is unhealthy and this disease is infecting several students. We must be sure to cure this disease by offering only healthy food in the cafeteria of schools.
