  3. Las sílabas en el español Key to proper pronunciation: knowing where to stress a word. To do this, we also need to know how Spanish divides words into syllables. Las VOCALES – Vowels A, E, I, O, U* – y*

  4. La sílabas del español • a, o, e - vowel is in a separate syllable. Consonants USUALLY go with the vowel that comes after it. cardenal poquito consonante Car de nal po qui to* Con so nan te

  5. The Vowels i and u alone form syllables with corresponding consonants • Mina • Pico • Duda • Universidad

  6. two vowels together form separate syllables except for when one is i or u- and sometimes y • the combination of i or u- with another vowel forms a diphthong. Creo Teo leemos Sea

  7. u after q is not considered a vowel in words with the sequence qui or que • u after g is not considered a vowel in the gui or gue sequence except where indicated by dieresis – ü – bilingüe . • Consonants are separated unless they from a consonant cluster. • Combinations with r – p,t,c,b,d,g – prestar, traer, creer, abre, madre, grave • Combinations with l – plaza, clima, hablador, doble • Letter combinations representing one sound – ll, rr, ch

  8. When dividing words into syllables in Spanish: • If you have a consonant between two vowels, divide before the consonant: u – va • If you have one of these combinations of consonants – Do NOT divide them. • Any other time you have 2 consonants together, divide between them. an – tes • When you have 2 vowels together, divide between them UNLESS one or both of them is an i or a u. Br, cr, dr, gr, gr, tr; bl, cl, gl, pl; ll, rr, ch

  9. Lets try these:

  10. Acentuación • Once we know how to divide words into syllables - we can determine where the stress goes! • There are three BASIC rules:

  11. 1 • Words that end with a vowel, n or s are stressed on the next to last syllable. • Canto • Acaban • vamos

  12. 2 • Words ending with any other consonant are stressed on the last syllable. • Papel • Estupidez • cartel

  13. 3. • All exceptions are marked with an accent mark. • Accent marks also separate dipthongs. • Sillón • Lápiz • biología
