  1. “Be Strong In the Grace that is in Christ Jesus,” 2 Timothy 2:1-18. • V. 1. “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. • V. 2. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. • V. 3. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

  2. v. 4. “No man that warrethentangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may pleased him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. V. 5. And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. V. 6. The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. V. 7. Consider what I say; and the Lord give the understanding in all things. V. 8. Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel.

  3. v. 9. “Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. v. 10. Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. V. 11. It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with Him. V. 12. If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him; if we deny Him, he also will deny us.

  4. V. 13. “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful; He cannot deny Himself. V. 14. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. V. 15. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

  5. V. 16. “But shun profane and vain babblings; for they will increase unto more ungodliness. V. 17. And their word will eat as doth a canker; of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus: V. 18. Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. v. 19. Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal. The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

  6. Paul Often Encouraged His Readers to “Be Strong!” • I Corinthians 16:13-14. • Ephesians 6:10. • 2 Timothy 2:1. • “Be Strong in the grace that is in Christ..” • The “grace..in Christ” gives freedom from the guilt of sin, Rom. 8:2; Eph. 1:7; Rom. 3:24. • The “grace that is in Christ” gives us “the hope of eternal life,” Titus 3:7.

  7. To “Be Strong in the Grace that is in Christ Jesus,” we Must Teach Others! Note v. 2. • Teaching Others Helps to Strengthen us! • It forces us to study! • It forces us to take an interest in others, thus obeying the “second” command, Matt. 22:35-40 • The knowledge gained helps a person avoid sin in his life, Psalm 119:11. • It motivates us to be morally pure, Rom. 2:21. • It makes one more aware of the importance of the local church, and more committed to its work. Cf. I Timothy 3:15

  8. To be Strong We Must Endure Hardness as good Soldiers of Jesus Christ, v. 3-4! • We are in a warfare! I Tim. 6:12; 2 Cor. 10:3-5 • True Soldiers are expected to be able to “endure hardness.” We must be tough! • To resist the devil, Jas. 4:7; I Pet. 5:8-9. • To stand for Jesus, Eph. 6:11,13-14. • To have the courage to resist error, Tit. 1:9-11. • To have the character to forgive, Luke 23:34. • The character to take up the cross, Matt. 16:24. • To avoid entanglements which limit our ability.

  9. To Be Strong in Christ Jesus, We Must Compete “According to the rules,” 2 Tim. 2:5. • The Metaphor used here is that of an athlete, probably referring to the Olympic Wrestling Contests. They had rules to follow. • As Christians, we have rules to follow; the N.T. is our rule book, Heb. 1:1; 9:15. • All that we do must be done by the authority of Christ, Colossians 3:17. • Illus. A football game, in the playoffs, the last second; the game is tied!

  10. To Be Strong, we Must “Consider” what the Apostles Have Written, 2 Tim. 3:7. • Consider (noeo), “to perceive with the mind, to undertand, to think upon, ponder, to consider.” • Isaiah 55:18, “Come and let us reason… • The Apostle Paul: • “Reasoned” with the Thessalonians, Acts 17:2. • “Reasoned in the synagogue,” Acts 18:4. • “Reasonedwith the Jews,” Acts 18:19. • “Reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come,” Acts 24:25.

  11. To Be Strong We Must “Remember that Jesus..was raised from the dead,” v. 8. • Many do not believe this! One poll of “ministers” were asked, “do you believe in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead?” 51% of Methodist ministers, 35% of Episcopalian, 33% of American Baptists, and 13% of American Lutherans answered “No!” • Note Romans 1:4; 2 Timothy 2:9-10. • Without the resurrection: • There is no Gospel, I Cor. 15:1-4. • Your faith is in vain, I Cor. 15:17. • There is no hope, I Cor. 15:19.

  12. To Be Strong, One Must Study to show himself “approved unto God,” 2 Tim. 2:15. • If there is a God, if the Bible is the word of God, surely one can not be “approved unto God” if he does not study His word. • Study to “rightly” divide the word. • Few books are so poor studied by most. • The Bible must be obeyed, Mt. 7:21; yet it cannot be rightly obeyed unless it is “rightly” divided! • While seeking to “rightly” divide the word we must “shun profane and vain babbling,” v. 16.

  13. Conclusion • Fact: If you want to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus,” You must obey the instructions contained in this chapter. • Yet no one can “be strong in the grace that is in Christ,” if he is not “in Christ,” and if he has not been saved by grace! • Have you been saved by grace? Are you“in Christ? “
