  2. DIDLS- Diction • The diction in the poem brings forth the imagination of the reader and allows the reader to decipher his/or her own understanding of the poem. The line ‘’I wake to sleep and take my waking slow ‘’, is repeated a lot throughout the poem to provide a positive connotation of the narrator waking up and reflecting about life and death calmly.

DIDLS-Images • Images in the poem that helped me understand the tone and flow of the poem is ‘’sleep’’, ‘’God’’, ‘’Light takes the Tree’’, ‘’winding stair’’, ‘’Great Nature’’, and ‘’lively air’’ . All these words provide images of religion and life that serve as the main themes of the poem. I can understand that the narrator is contemplating death and refers constantly to God , so he can know where he has to go.

DIDLS- Details • A detail that helps provide understanding of the poem is ‘’I feel my fate in what I cannot fear, ’’ this is about being closer to gaining spirituality concerning the acceptance of death. ‘’So take the lively air, /And, lovely, learn by going where to go’’ is asking to enjoy life because time is brief and Death will soon reach you.

  5. DIDLS - Language • The language of the poem is formal and figurative. A metaphor is used in the ‘’ Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?’’ This line suggests the narrator is talking about God , who is the only one who can decide the reader’s fate. The lines , ‘’I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow’’ and ‘’I learn by going where I have to go.’’ , rhyme and serve as a paradox because sleeping and walking are complete opposites. Waking up from sleep allows the narrator to gain a spirituality that comforts him.

  6. DIDLS - Structure • The poem is a villanelle , with two lines of the poem are constantly repeated allowing the meaning of the poem to become clearer each time it’s repeated. The lines add movement and flow to the poem to create a positive tone from the poem. ‘’I wake to sleep , and take my waking slow, / I learn by going where I have to go. ‘’
