  3. Why did an arms race develop? • The need to keep ahead • The need to increase their own reputation • Even at the expense of lying!

  4. As one side was perceived to get ahead the other felt the need to catch up= spiral=ARMS RACE

  5. How was this different from other arms races in history? • The huge destructive power • So great it would AVOID war

  7. Nuclear weapons were to be used to pressure opponents to gain political ends

  8. RESULTS AND IMPACT OF THE ARMS RACE • MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction • By 1960 both Superpowers had MASSIVE weapon capability • These could be delivered in a variety of ways – land, air, sea
