  2. Overview: • For this part of the test, you will listen to an account about Madame Marie Curie, answer some multiple choice questions, and write a response based on the situation described below. You will hear the account (reading) twice. You may take notes on the next page anytime you wish during the readings.

  3. Your Task: Write a presentation for your science class in which you describe the qualities that made Madame Marie Curie a successful scientist • Guidelines: ~ Tell your audience what they need to know about Madame Marie Curie and the qualities that made her a successful scientist ~ Use specific, accurate, and relevant information from the account to support your description ~ Organize your thoughts in a logical and coherent manner ~ Indicate any words taken directly from the account by using quotation marks or referring to the speaker

Guides for Taking Notes: • Re-read the “Overview” and the “Situation” • Fold your note taking paper in half • Listen carefully and write the most important details (facts) regarding Madame Marie Curies: ~ Qualities ` That made her the successful scientist that she was ~ Accomplishments • Don’t worry about your spelling during your note taking

  13. Madame Marie Curie’s:Accomplishments • 1893- Madame Marie Curie was the 1st. Woman ever to graduate with a degree in physics • Graduated 1st. In Class • Won “2” Nobel Prizes: 1st. In 1903 – Contribution to the discovery of radiation 2nd. In 1911 – Isolation of Polonium/Radium 1. destroyed cancers and tumors 2. used in cosmetics, tea, and tonics 3. glowed in the dark – paint/toys * Sadly, over exposure killed Marie, her daughter and many others

  14. Group Work: • Task: To break up into groups and fully explain (using examples from the reading) why the following adjectives best describe the kind of person that Madame Marie Curie was. • Assign each group “3” Adjectives each and share out afterwards
