  2. (U2C5L1:G2) • Name the four basic movements in marching the platoon. • Forward marching, columns, flanks, and rear marches • Changing direction, marching to the flank, forming a file and re-forming, and forming a column of twos and re-forming • Forming flanks, forming files, forming a column of twos and re-forming • Changing direction in quick time, mark time, double time, and halt Click to see the correct answer

  3. Prepare for this lesson by discussing the key questions of this Student Learning Plan. • What will you accomplish in this lesson? • Why is the lesson important? • When will you have successfully met the lesson’s purpose? • Answer the Lesson Question: • What are platoon formations and how are they different from squad formations?

  4. Learning Objectives • Describe the correct response to the commands for forming and marching the platoon • Compareplatoon drills and squad drills • Matchdrill commands to platoon formations • Define key words: cover, flank, formations, interval, line, pivot

  5. Divide the class into two teams, the “Squad Drill” team and “Platoon Drill” team. Have a volunteer from each team be the team recorder. Create a Tree Map titled “Platoon and Squad Drill.” Label one branch “Similarities” and the other “Differences.” Divide Cadets into two groups

  6. Similarities and differences from Tree Maps

  7. Reflection: • Why do the differences exist between platoon and squad drill? What about the similarities?

  8. Think about the importance of accurate commands in drill. Gather - So, what else do you need to know or learn? Gather Phase

  9. Assign groups/squads the following topics. Divide Cadets into groups of 4-5

  10. Research topics using jigsaw technique Research your topics in the student text and in the FM 3-21.5 using the jigsaw technique, and prepare to demonstrate your drill.

  11. Practice the topic(s) you researched.  • Senior Cadets will coach your teams and provide demonstrations where necessary.

  12. As a team, demonstrate your drills to the class.

  13. (U2C5L1:Q3) Study the diagram and select the option (A-D) that best completes the procedure for executing this platoon movement. • X = Reverse, MARCH; Y = 1 step; Z = 3 steps • X = To the Rear, MARCH; Y = 2 steps; Z = 2 steps • X = Counter column, MARCH; Y = 1 step; Z = 1 step • X = Counter, COLUMN; Y = 2 steps; Z = 2 steps Click to see the correct answer

  14. (U2C5L1:Q1) • While in formation, the Platoon Leader calls "Cadet Private Wilson, Front and Center." • What should Cadet Wilson, who is in the center of the second rank, do? • The Cadet should come to attention, reply "Here, Sir/Ma'am," take one 15-inch step backward, halt, face to the right (left) in marching, and exit the formation by marching to the nearest flank. • The Cadet should come to attention, turn his head and eyes toward the Platoon Leader, and wait for further instructions. • The Cadet should come to attention, reply "Here, Sir/Ma'am," take two steps back and move around the closest flank to a position in front, and centered on, the Company Commander or First Sergeant. • The Cadet should come to attention, reply "Here, Sir/Ma'am," and move through first squad to a position in front of the Platoon Leader. Click to see the correct answer

  15. Reflection: • What is the function of using platoon formations in drill? • What are some advantages to learning platoon drill?

  16. Think about what is involved to perfect the movements in platoon drill. Process - Now what can you do with this new information you’ve learned? Process Phase

  17. Practice drills demonstrated in the Gather Phase. Rotate leadership positions within the squad so that everyone gets a chance to give, and respond to, the drill commands. Give and accept constructive criticism as required. Keep Cadets in same groups

  18. (U2C5L1:Q2) • For in-ranks inspections, platoons increase the space between squads by giving the command to Open Ranks. • Select the option (A-D) that best indicates how a platoon executes "Open Ranks, MARCH." • 1st Squad takes 1 Step forward; 2nd Squad stays in place; 3rd Squad takes 2 Steps backwards; 4th Squad takes 4 Steps backwards. • 1st Squad takes 2 Steps forward; 2nd Squad takes 1 Step forward; 3rd Squad stays in place; 4th Squad takes 2 Steps backwards. • 1st Squad takes 3 Steps forward; 2nd Squad takes 2 Steps forward; 3rd Squad takes 1 Step forward; 4th Squad stays in place. • 1st Squad takes 4 Steps forward; 2nd Squad takes 3 Steps forward; 3rd Squad takes 2 Steps forward ; 4th Squad takes 1 Step forward. 19. (U2C5L1:Q4) • You were marching your platoon to the parade field to participate in a ceremony. When you got there, a display was set up at the entrance and it was only wide enough for two of your four squads to march through. • What command should you give to most efficiently get your platoon through the display and onto the parade field? • Platoon, HALT. File from the right, MARCH. • Mark-time, MARCH. Counter-column, MARCH. • Platoon, HALT. Column of twos from the right, MARCH. • Mark-time, MARCH. Column of twos from the right, MARCH.
