  7. Deciding what to do after high school should be based on . . . • realistic personal assessment of individual likes and dislikes; • strengths and weaknesses; • exploring careers of interest; • making career decisions; and • exploring alternatives to prepare to pursue these options.

Area of Focus • 8th Grade Work on 6-year plan and circle designated Area of Focus classes • 9th Grade Review 6-year plan and update Area of Focus. • 10th Grade Review 6-year plan and declare Area of Focus. Begin to track appropriate courses. • 11th Grade Review 6-year plan and continue to track appropriate courses. • 12th Grade Area of Focus designation will automatically be placed on transcript

  13. Choosing the Right College • Will I be trained for my career? • What is the placement rate for people in my major? • Does the school offer programs of interest? • Is the school the right size for me? • Can I afford to attend this school? • How far away am I willing to go?

Visitcampuses… • Choose several schools to visit during 2nd semester of junior year if possible • Call the admissions office to schedule a formal visit • Take advantage of half-days and other days school is not in session • Pick up a “Questions to Ask on Your Campus Visit” sheet from the Counseling Center

Important 2014 Enrollment Dates • Feb 7: Enrollment Fair • Career Speakers • Course Request Sheets • Feb 12: Deadline for Special Programs • Feb 7-18: Teacher Recommendations • Feb 19: Summer School Enrollment Opens • Feb 19: Course Request Sheets Due • Feb 19: Online Enrollment System Opens • Feb 26: Online Enrollment System Closes • Mar 4/6: Enrollment Conferences

What Juniors Can Expect During Enrollment Fair… • Start the day with advisory teacher to pick up passports, tickets, and instructions. • Attend an optional seminar to learn about senior-only course offerings (Cadet teaching, International Studies, and SBE). • Tour campus displays (independently) to learn about LSHS courses. • Attend TWO career seminars to learn about careers of interest.

Senior Year Options • Centers of Excellence • Dual Credit Courses – • Pg. 6 - Career & Educational Planning Guide • College Credit English • College Credit Algebra • Work Internships • Clerical Aid • Dual Enrollment—Longview • MCC/Longview Satellite Enrollment • Cerner Scholars • Missouri Innovations Campus • IB Career Certificate Applications for these programs due Feb. 12th!

  25. Option1—Full 7-hour Day at LSHS • Enroll in 7 credits and no Learning Lab. • Enroll in 6.5 credits and one semester of Learning Lab/Clerical Aide. • Enroll in 6 credits and two semesters of Learning Lab/Clerical Aide. • Replace 1st or 7th hour with R-7 Online Academy course. • Applications for Clerical Aid must be turned in to Counseling Center by February 12th. CA eligibility determination is based on credits needed for graduation.

  26. Option 2—Short Day with Work Internship • Apply for the SBE, CCE or Marketing Internship Programs by February 12th. • If approved, obtain signature from program sponsor. • Students attend classes hours 1-5 or 3-7 depending on their work schedules/needs. • Students can earn 3 credits in a school year for work internships – 1 for class and 2 for work (must average 20hrs/week at work).

Option 3—LSHS Classes & Centers of Excellence • Apply to Herndon, Cass, or Summit Technology Academy by February 12th. • If approved for STA, obtain signature from counselor. • Students accepted to Herndon & Cass for the first time will be notified in April. They must enroll in a full schedule until accepted. • Second-year Cass/ Herndon students will be notified before they enroll online-Jan. 19. • Afternoon and morning sessions: • STA—Students can take 4 classes at LSHS and be at STA the other 3 hours. • Herndon/Cass—Students can take 3 classes at LSHS and be at Herndon or Cass the other 3 hours. • Students approved to attend Herndon and Cass must also sign up for a no-credit Vo-Tech Learning Lab.

Option 4—LSHS Classes & Longview • Initially, enroll in a full schedule at LSHS. • Apply to Longview, complete the placement test, and enroll in approved course or courses. • Bring counselor a class schedule and tuition receipt from Longview. • Counselor will adjust schedule to accommodate the Longview course(s). • Partial release can be AM or PM.
