  1. Staff Introduction to Destiny October 30, 2009

  2. Learning Target: • Without logging in, the staff will know how to use the catalog to find library materials to support their curriculum and advocate for reading.

  3. Directions • Open the Internet to the WVJH library homepage. • Click on: Online Catalog. • Click on: West Valley Junior High Library Catalog. • At the top left, click on: the tab for Catalog.

  4. Features • Power Search is advanced search • Material Type • Publication Year • Circulation Type • Visual Search – you can create • Top Ten – available in Destiny Quest

  5. Destiny Quest • Click on: Destiny Quest on the left-hand side. • Click on: Begin your Destiny Quest. • Without being logged on you get three options: • The Top 10 Books • New Arrivals • Search • Exit Destiny Quest

Learning Target: The staff member will logon to see the additional features that are available to promote reading and support the curriculum including: • Personal checkout list • Personal list • Creating lists • Creating Resource lists • Creating holds • Recommend a library material • Rate a library material • Review a library material

  7. Logon Info • Username: Skyward logon • First initial last name number Password: westvalley

  8. Personal Checkout List • Click on: My Info • You will see a list of all the books you have checked out. • Students can see this also.

  9. Personal List • Click on: Catalog • Type a title of a book. Hit enter. • Click on the title of the book to see all the information about the book. • Click on: Add to This List • Changes to: In this list.

  10. Creating Lists • From the catalog tab: • On the left, click on: Resource Lists. • On the upper right-hand side, click on the tab: Public Lists. • Click on the tab: My Lists. • To create an additional list, click in the upper right-hand corner: Add list. • Create a name for your list. • Click the box if you want your list to be public. • In the description box, write a description of the list. How will it help students with research or how does it relate to an assignment. • Click on Save.

  11. Creating a Visual Search • From the catalog tab: • On the left-hand side click on: Search Setup • To the right-hand side of Visual Search Home you can create your own visual search. You can add your own icon and library materials or URLs. • OR you can use the existing categories and icons to create your own list of library materials and URLs. • Ask Jeanne for more detailed directions.

  12. Creating Holds • Using the catalog, select a title, title details. • In the lower right-hand corner, click on: Hold It! • Select when you would like the title. • Save. • Window at the top of the page indicates you have created a hold.

  13. Recommend a Library Material • Using the catalog, select a title, title details. • On the right-hand side, click on: Recommend button. • Enter the name of the person to whom you would like to recommend this book. • Click on: Go • Click on: their name • Type your recommendation in the textbox. • Click on Save. The message will be available to the person when they logon.

  14. Rate/Review a Library Material • Using the catalog, select a title, title details. • At the top, click on: Reviews. • How do you rate this book? Click the number of stars you think the book deserves. The more stars the better the book. • To include a review of the book, write in the textbox. Capitalization, grammar, and spelling are important. • Enter your name in the display name box. • OR you can upload a review of the book. • Click on Save.

  15. Destiny Quest • On the left-hand side, click on: Destiny Quest. • Click on: Begin your Destiny Quest. • More options: • Drag and Drop into a resource list • Search • My Info

  16. Future of Destiny • Staff to add resource lists for their classes. • Staff to add a reading list for their advisory. • Jeanne to add InfoTrac and other Internet sources into Destiny. • Jeanne will discover more features to support staff.
