Malcolm X: Black People’s Rep.

Malcolm X was an African-American Muslim minister, public speaker, and human

rights activist.

To his admirers, he was a brave representative for the rights of African Americans. He has been described as one of the most influential African Americans of the 20th century. Malcolm X was born in Omaha, Nebraska. By the time he was 13, his father had died and his mother spent her life in a mental hospital. After living in many foster homes, Malcolm X became involved in crimes in Boston and New York. In 1945, Malcolm X was sentenced to eight to 10 years in prison. While in prison, Malcolm X

became a Muslim.

The civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King fought against racial segregation. But, Malcolm X wanted the complete separation of African Americans from white people. Malcolm X also rejected the civil rights movement’s strategy of nonviolence. Instead, he argued that black people should use any necessary means of self-defense to protect themselves. Malcolm X was killed while giving a speech in New York at an age of 40. He is regarded as a person who raised the self-esteem of

black Americans and reminded them of their African heritage.
