  1. Lecture 25 Hay Storage

  2. Impact of weather... Baling moisture % = 18 - 22%  older equipment used to "shut you down"  new equipment does not...  deterioration occurs above 105o F  mold & heat generation occur 113-150o F  spontaneous combustion 150o F and above

  3. Reducing Storage Losses • well drained area •  on rock (large) •  on tires     Allow air to move •  on palates •  North - South Orientation - solar penetration •  rows - 3 feet apart •  minimizes losses to 5-10% / year... •  Cover with bonnet or tarp - 5-10% reduction •  divert water •  dry access important too. •  Expected Annual losses 1. Inside bale - 3 - 5 % DM loss 2. Outside bale 15-18 % DM loss

  4. Storage in a building • Expected losses... •  1.  2-5% - 9 months  2.  8% - 12 months •  Building Considerations •  minimum 2' wider than bale width... •  minimum 2' clearance to lower cord •  pyramid stacking - "squat" •  may only require roof •  economics - savings; $/sq. Ft for purchase • $/ton 15% 20% 40 1.85 2.46 50 2.30 3.08 60 2.77 3.69 80 3.69 4.92

  5. Building Ownership costs must be considered • depreciation (5%) •  interest (9%) •  insurance ( .3%) •  taxes (1%) •  Total = 16% 1000 # bale —> 80 # / sq. ft. •  stacking against walls/poles •  force considerations
