  3. Idea – Character design, creation inspired by fantasy art. Good examples – early science fiction books. Early fantasy art was usually the result of narrative, and thus illustrations for books or pulp fiction journals was a primary source of income for fantasy artists. Thus modern fantasy art (and science fiction art) was born out of the literary world. Modern literary inspirations include icons Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan) and J.R.R. Tolkien (author of Lord of the Rings). Serigraphy – the earliest printing technique to put images on paper. 1947 Avon Books 1960 Unknown Worlds The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingBen Wootten

  4. Dark Fantasy Art José Segrelles - War of the Worlds, 1969 J.R.R. Tolkien – Smaug’s Lair, 1983 Virgil Finlay – Untitled, 1935 Popular themes are vampires, demons, gothic art, wiccan and pagan art, horror art and dark surreal themes. Further idea development - dark fantasy characters inspired by gothic themes.
