  1. Becoming a Foster Parent By: Kendra Oyesanya

  2. SpecificPurpose • To persuade my audience to become a foster parent so that more children in foster care can be provided with the love and support they need to find success in life.

  3. Thesis Statement: Becoming a foster parent is an incredible opportunity to care for children whose families are currently unable to care for them.

  4. Introduction • Today more than 463,000 children live in foster care. • These same children are growing up in a system where they have to live with the emotional heartaches of neglect, abuse, and abandonment.

  5. Statement of Need: • Children across the nation have been removed from their birth family homes for various reasons and they need your help. • There are thousands of children in foster care but not enough families willing to provide a safe and supportive environment for these children. • Becoming a foster parent isn't easy which is why not everyone does it. • Some children are unable to remain with or return safely to their birth families.

  6. Statement of need continued: Becoming a foster parent is important • The foster parent plays an important role in helping achieve reunification. • Statistics show a poor and unpromising future for many of the children in the foster care system.

  7. Solution that satisfies the need Become a Foster Parent Oklahoma Requirements: • Be at least 21 years of age. • Have the ability to manage personal and household financial needs. • Fulfill the OKDHS policy on background investigations for all household members 13 years and older. • Have a working vehicle and appropriate sleeping arrangements for each child placed. • Be able to work as part of a team with social workers and biological parents. Once you decide you're interested in becoming a foster parent go to okdhs.org for more information and call for an application to fill out.

  8. Visualization • Becoming a foster parent benefits both the child and foster parent. • The most important benefit to becoming a foster parent is your ability to make a difference in the life of a child in need. • You as a foster parent can become a good role model for a child undergoing confusion and distress. • Most states provide financial compensation for the costs of foster parenting. • Adopting a foster child in many cases is easier than adopting from an agency or private attorney.

  9. Action: • Contribute to the well being of a child in foster care today. Share in the child’s growth, be a positive influence, and make a difference in a child’s life today.
