Poverty in India is one of the main reasons why many children are stuck in the vicious cycle of child labour. Many of these children hail from families of daily wage earners who are unable to fend for the family members and ensure basic necessities are provided. This is why many lower-income households are in constant need of everyday resources so they choose to not spend any money on school fees. Most of the children are either never

At such an impressionable age, children are forced to let go of their education and much-needed playtime to engage in labour. Education, stable income, and aspirations for a white-collar job are not prioritized and thus minimum wages and menial jobs are the few options that they are left with. Another reason for increasing child labour in India is that children are seen as cheaper resources that work profitably for unethical employers. The requirement for unskilled labour is quite high, especially in factories and other odd jobs like assisting vendors, becoming domestic help etc. Such environments are quite hazardous for children’s health and also affect their psychological well-being. According to the Government of India - 12th five-year plan 2012-2017, it is estimated that about 40 percent of children in India are in difficult circumstances or vulnerable such as orphan and abandoned children, forced child labour, abused/trafficked children, children on the streets, affected by substance abuse, natural calamity etc. CRY (Child Rights and You) has been working hard to protect underprivileged children from the vicious cycle of child labour. One of them being the 12-year-old Naveen who hails from a poor family in Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh). He went on to win a National Science Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology. Naveen was on the brink of permanently discontinuing his education to help his father sell vegetables and financially support the family but thankfully found the right support system in CRY that supported his aspirations and curiosity.
