  23. Resource Sharing and WISCAT • Charles Clemence • Resource Sharing Consultant • Winding Rivers Library System

  24. Resource Sharing and WISCAT • 40 Public Libraries/Branches (39 WISCAT members) • 10 School Districts (11 WISCAT members) • 3 Special Libraries (3 WISCAT members) • 3 Academic Libraries (1 WISCAT, 1 ILLiad, 1 OCLC) • All members handle their own requests

  25. How WRLS Structures ILL: Borrowing Enter requests • About half of our publics do patron initiated at some level Manage requests • Updating • Circulation • Stats Requests not filled from initial lender list default to WRLS • Refer within WISCAT • Send direct on OCLC (for libraries/formats that don't accept ISO) • Send to RL&LL for OCLC referral via ISO connection

  26. How WRLS Structures ILL:Lending Members receive most lending request directly • Exception-some non-WISCAT libraries email request to WRLS • Exception-som reserves are handled by WRLS Respond to all requests • WRLS requires a 90% response minimum Manage/update all loan requests (including notices) • WRLS does some follow up on unreturned items Update holdings in WISCAT • WRLS requires annual updates or an active searchable catalog

  27. ILL Activity in Winding Rivers In 2011 WRLS member libraries • Entered 32,161 borrowing requests • Received 25,151 lending requests • Responded to over 99% of these requests • Added 3 catalogs as search targets in WISCAT • Expect to add 2 more in 2012 • All met the WRLS updating requirement • Over half of WLRS members participate in out of state lending with other users of the AG software

  28. Use of RL&LL services for ILL RL&LL does the following for our members: • Handle the set up of WISCAT • Search targets • Default settings • Troubleshoot the software • Solves many problems locally • Refers others to be fixed by the vendor • Represent Wisconsin/WISCAT at user group meetings

  29. Use of RL&LL services for ILL • Serve as secondary default location in WISCAT • Refers requests within WISCAT • Does follow up problem solving/training for WISCAT members • Manage the ISO connection to OCLC libraries • Allows borrowing requests to go automatically to OCLC • Requests stay in WISCAT from the lender's perspective • Theoretically allows lending to ILLiad libraries • Haven't made this connection work yet, but it's a goal • Manage sharing with other AG customers (ISSI)

  30. Why WISCAT? • OCLC has long been seen as the gold standard for ILL Why maintain the WISCAT project? • Clearly there are disadvantages to WISCAT • Many Wisconsin Libraries don't participate • Most of state requesting requires OCLC • The WISCAT project uses a big chunk of LSTA Funds

  31. Why WISCAT? Most of RL&LL's efforts in recent years have been to address these disadvantages • The ISO connection with OCLC has made the issue of WISCAT membership much less important • Requests can go direct to non-WISCAT libraries in and out of Wisconsin • Out of state requesting--through ISO or the ISSI project--can be done within WISCAT • Reliance on LSTA has lessened somewhat, but in the end it's a subsidy. If small libraries need help to participate in ILL they'll need it for OCLC as well as WISCAT

  32. WISCAT works for our members • It's a cost they can afford • Routine requests can be handled locally at even the smallest library (85% get filled by the initial lender list) • Problem requests automatically go to a default location for specialists to work on • Configuration, setup, and troubleshooting are done centrally

  33. WISCAT works for our members • Configuration, setup, and troubleshooting are done centrally • WRLS sets up preferred lenders, defaults, display • RL&LL sets up new targets, manages software problems and changes • As a result, managing WISCAT at the local level is doable for all our members • The ability to search live catalogs ends the necessity of double updating • Auto-responding saves much time for patrons and staff

  34. Conclusion • WISCAT works for our member libraries and their patrons better than current alternatives • WISCAT wouldn't be possible without RL&LL • We need to maintain the program until something better comes along • Statewide ILS? • A new kind of ILL program? • Chips in our heads loaded with all the knowledge, art, and literature of the world?
