Forgotten Strands: Progressing Ageing Data for SDGs

This project aims to analyze available evidence, conduct horizon scanning, develop a conceptual framework, and align with SDG goals to improve data on ageing populations. It also seeks to standardize data, create a platform for information sharing, and overcome challenges faced by NSOs. The main objectives include anticipating future data needs, assessing available data for monitoring the pledge to 'leave no one behind' in relation to older people, and producing a digital platform for sharing information internationally.

  1. The ‘Forgotten Strands’Progressing strands 2, 4 and 6 Sarah Crofts Office for National Statistics, UK

  2. The work plan • Analysis of available evidence • Horizon scanning • Conceptual framework • Alignment to SDG goals and other work • Standardisation and harmonisation • Platform for sharing data and information Office for National Statistics, UK

  3. Horizon scanning – main objectives? • To anticipate future data needs related to ageing populations • To identify how well countries are set up to meet these needs • e.g. will countries be able to measure changes in the need for housing, health, transport or social care? • To identify opportunities for improvements to data • e.g. data linkage, Big Data, longitudinal studies, citizen-generated data. Office for National Statistics, UK

  4. Alignment to SDGs and other relevant work – main objectives? • To deliver an assessment of available data to monitor the pledge to ‘leave no one behind’ in relation to older people • To interface with the IAEG on SDG indicators and identify data needs to monitor the SDG framework for older people. • To contribute to harmonisation and standards for producing ageing related data for disaggregation of SDG indicators. • To pilot innovative approaches to overcoming challenges faced by NSOs in relation to availability and presentation of SDG data in relation to older people. Office for National Statistics, UK

  5. Platform for sharing data and information – main objectives? • To produce a digital platform for sharing information internationally • It needs to be accessible (e.g. language options, secure) • There needs to be scope for sharing country case studies, academic work • To identify the legal/ethical barriers for sharing data and information • To assess suitability of platforms (e.g. Data Shield and SDMX) Office for National Statistics, UK

  6. Your task • In groups, reflect on the main objectives. Are there any missing? • Review the deliverables. Are these right? What needs to be added or changed? • What are the priority steps that are needed? What should we do in years 2, 3 and 4? • Who needs to be involved? • Are there dependencies with other strands? Office for National Statistics, UK
