  1. Understanding Earths Interior This Activity will allow you to become familiar with the Earths layers and the process that occur within them.

  2. Click on the star to Begin Core Follow-Up Exercise

  3. Crust • Solid • Composition: Oxygen, aluminum, Calcium, Iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium, Silicon • 5-40 km thick but has an average of 32 km

  4. Earths Crust Earths crust is composed of a dozen plates covering earths surface. These dozen are either oceanic or continental crust. http://www.dnr.sc.gov/geology/images/Earths_crust.gif

  5. Click on the star to continue….. Core

  6. Mantle • 2800 km thick • Is both solid and liquid • Composition: Silicon, Oxygen, Iron, Magnesium • There are convection cells in the mantle that cause important forces on the surface. Next: What are convection Cells?

  7. Click on Links to Watch Animations • http://education.sdsc.edu/optiputer/flash/convection.htm • http://www.manatee.k12.fl.us/sites/elementary/samoset/altconvection.htm

  8. Click on the star to continue…… Core

  9. Core The core is divided into two layer: the Inner and Outer core • Outer Core • Composition - Nickel and Iron • 870 degree Celsius • 2,250 km thick • Liquid layer Inner Core Composition- Iron and Nickel 1,200 km thick 2000-5000 degrees Celsius Solid, because of enormous pressure of overlying matter

  10. Earth’s Magnetic Field Earth’s rotation causing the liquid iron outer core to spin around the solid iron inner core is believed to cause the formation of Earth’s Magnetic Field. www.gly.fsu.edu

  11. Quick Quiz Earths crust is divided into two types. They are? • Surface and continental • Continental and Oceanic • Oceanic and Mantle • Mantle and Surface

  12. Quick Quiz Earth’s inner core is hotter and solid, while the outer core is colder and liquid? Why is this? • The inner core is made out of material that resists heat better. • The Outer core is not even solid, but is liquid also. • The inner cores overlying pressure causes it stay solid.

  13. Quick Quiz Temperature increases with pressure, then this layer has the lowest pressure? • Core • Crust • Mantle

  14. Quick Quiz This is formed by movement of mantle material? • Magnetic Field • Convection Cells • Earths rotation
