WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW??? • Course Selection and Scheduling for 2012-13 School Year • Timeline: • February 3: Course Cards were given out to students • February 6-7: Teachers discuss departmental course options and make recommendations • February 15-29: Students enter their course selections into Course Planner during History classes • Juniors – mainly on Feb. 15 -17

WEST HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS 22 total credits in the following areas • 4 credits of English • 3 credits of Social Studies (including 1 semester of Modern US History) • 2 credits of Math (Algebra 1 and Geometry or Integrated Math 1 & 2) • 2 credits of Science (Biology and another science) • 1.50 credits of Physical Education • .50 credit of Health • 9 additional electives

SO MANY OPTIONS!!!THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING COURSES • Preparation for life beyond high school • College and career goals • Level of course (AP, Honors, Advanced) • Exploration/Curiosity • Potential Hobby/Lifelong Interest • Job and/or Family Responsibilities?? • Consider Early Release • Sports or other Extracurricular Activities??? • Consider a Study Hall • Not a Morning Person?? • Consider Late Arrival

  11. YOUTH OPTIONS If you have exhausted all course offerings in a subject area, the district sometimes funds UW/MATC coursework. You must apply by 3/1/12 for the fall of 2012, and 10/1/12 for the spring of 2013. See your student’s counselor.

WHAT’S NEXT? • March Developmental Guidance Lessons • Post-secondary Options will continue to be researched • Sign up for ACT and/or SAT • Register on-line: www.act.org or www.collegeboard.com • ACT=Math, Reading, Social Studies, Science (Writing) • SAT I=Math and Verbal Reasoning, Writing • All colleges accept either ACT or SAT • Investigate Volunteer Opportunities and/or Work Experience --- Get involved, follow a passion • Visit Schools….ROAD TRIP!!!!! 

  13. WHAT ARE THE POST-H.S. OPTIONS? • Four year college/university • 1-2 year college/tech/specialty school • Employment • Apprenticeship • Military • Gap Year (Why? What?)

WHY GO TO COLLEGE? • “Because I’m s’posed to” • Keep learning, gain wisdom, become ‘worldly’ • Increase earning potential • The college experience – independence, new opportunities, expanding relationships, fun • Pursue a satisfying career and hobbies of interest • Don’t know what else to do • Get away from home

WHAT DO COLLEGES LOOK AT? • Transcript, rigor of courses, GPA, and upward trend in grades • SAT or ACT scores • Involvement and commitment to service and/or extracurricular activities • Thoughtful, personal, well-written essay • Letters of recommendation • Evidence of special talents, unique experiences, and accomplishments

A Peek At Senior Year…. • Plan to submit college applications between Sept 15-Dec 1 • Colleges expect students to apply ON-LINE • Coming NEW next year….eTranscripts • Transcript requests will be made online beginning with next year’s seniors. • More information about the college application process will be in the August Counseling Newsletter and in counselor presentations in September.

  17. There’s much AHEAD and LOTS to think about, but we still need Balance and Perspective…

  18. This is our kids’ journey. We are their guides, but they are the travelers. So, remember to support, pester a bit, offer opinions, and BREATHE!
