  1. Drilling Machines Unit 53 Metalwork Technology and Practice

  2. Drill Press • Defined: A machine that holds and turns a drill to cut holes in metal • Drill: A tooling device used for cutting holes.

  3. Drill Press Safety (I) • Remove Jewelry and eliminate loose clothing. • Wear eye protection. • Be sure the key is removed before turning on the machine. • Turn off the power if work gets caught in the drill. • Adjust the depth stop to avoid drilling into the table.

  4. Drill Press Safety (II) • Select the proper speed, faster for wood and slower for metal. The larger the bit, the slower the speed. • Work should always be secured with a fastening device. • The right hand operates the feed wheel and the left hand should always be in the secure position.

  5. Portable Electric and Cordless Drill Safety • Be sure the electric drill is disconnected from the power source before installing bits. • Make sure the bit is sharpened before use. • Make sure the chuck key has been removed before starting the drill • Secure all work before drilling. • Use a center punch to mark a starter hole.

  6. Handfeed Drill Press • Considered a small press • Small bits can only be used • Can set on a floor or bench top

  7. Drill Press Parts Belt Housing Speed Control Switch Spindle and Chuck Feed Handle Table Table Positioning Handle Column Base

  8. Radial Drill Press • Contains a movable arm where the spindle is mounted • The spindle may move and be set at different distances from the post or column • The arm can swing left to right • Used for large heavy work such as machine frames

  9. Multiple Spindle Drill Press • Drilling machine that contains multiple spindles fastened to the main spindle • Each holds a drill while all the drills operate at once • Time saving machine

  10. Turret Drill Press • Multiple spindle turret with 6,8, or 10 spindles • The bits are placed in a spindle and brought into position by indexing • Designed to perform several operation at one machine in a specific order

  11. Gang Drill Press • Two or more drill presses are ganged • Each spindle can operate alone • Mass production machine
