  1. Chapter 1Our Digital World Computer Applications Mrs. Wilson

  2. Explain & give examples of digital technologies Discuss advantages of using computers Identify components of a computer system Describe categories of computers Objectives: PAY ATTENTION & list all vocabulary terms in the presentation! How many will you have?

  3. Immersed in Digital Technology • How digital is your life? • Digital – a type of electronic signal that is processed, sent, and stored in bits • Bit – the smallest unit of data a computer can understand and act on • Computers use digital information • Digital Interaction Survey • Take 5 minutes to answer the survey You Are Digital Natives!

  4. Immersed in Digital Technology • Chip – a thin piece of square of silicon containing electronic circuitry that performs functions • Digital cameras (embedded), electronic coffee makers (embedded), cell phones, and computers all contain electronic chips

  5. Immersed in Digital Technology • Computer - an electronic device that: • Operates under the control of a set of instructions • Accepts data that a user supplies • Manipulates the data according to the programmed instructions • Produces the results • Stores the results for future use

  6. The Computer Advantage • Advantages of using a computer: • Speed • Accuracy • Versatility • Storage capabilities • Communication capabilities • The Internet & WWW

  7. The Computer Advantage • Network – a group of two or more computers, software, and other devices that are connected by means of one or more communications media • The network you are most likely familiar with is the Internet, the world’s largest network • Internet – a worldwide network of large and small networks linked together for the purpose of communicating and sharing information

  8. The Computer Advantage • In 2005, 1 BILLION people around the world were using the Internet for various purposes: • Sending/receiving e-mail (gmail, yahoo, AOL) • Researching information (stock quotes, weather, maps, news, airline schedules) • Buying/selling products and services (jcrew.com, Craigslist) • Taking online courses (college, ACCESS)

  9. The Computer Advantage • A widely used part of the Internet is the World Wide Web (WWW) • WWW – a global system of linked computer networks that allows user to move from one site to another by way of programmed links on Web pages • Web page– an electronic document stored at a location of the Web • Web site – a collection of Web pages

  10. The Computer Advantage • Search engine – a software program that enables a user to search for, locate, and retrieve information available on the WWW • Examples of search engines: • Google • Yahoo! • Bing • Ask • Excite • WebCrawler

  11. The Computer Advantage • Let’s go to www.google.com • Search ‘best vacation spots’ Whoa! Great example of speed and accuracy of a computer!

  12. Components of a Computer System • Technically, the term computer identifies only the system unit • System unit – the part of the computer system that processes data and stores information • Inside the system unit is the main circuit board; the motherboard – provides for the installation and connection of other electronic components • Computer system– system unit along with input devices, output devices, and storage devices • A computer system consists of two broad categories of components: hardware and software

  13. Components of a Computer System • Hardware – includes all of the physical components that make up the system unit plus other devices connected to it • Keyboard • Mouse • Printer • Speaker • Monitor • Software – consists of programs containing instructions that direct the operation of the computer system • System (operating system) - MOST IMPORTANT! • Application (Microsoft Office) • Communications (Skype, e-mail)

  14. Components of a Computer System • A hardware component or device may be an input or an output device • Input device – allows a user to enter program instructions, data, and commands into a computer • Keyboard • Mouse • Microphone • Output device – makes information available to a user • Monitors • Printers • Speakers

  15. Components of a Computer System • Storage device – provides for the permanent storage of programs, date, and information • Once stored, information can be retrieved, modified, displayed, imported, exported, copied, or printed • Examples of storage devices: • CD • DVD • Flash/Jump drive • Hard drive • Floppy disk

  16. Categories of Computers

  17. Questions & Comments How many vocabulary terms were there in the presentation?

  18. Exit Slip • Input or output device? • Monitor • Keyboard • Speaker • Microphone • Printer • Mouse
