  1. THE TRIUNE GODHEAD Three Persons, One Divine Essence

  2. Introduction • “Godhead in Bible 3 times: Acts 17:29; Romans 1:20; Colossians 2:9.

  3. Acts 17:29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead (Divine Nature, NKJV) is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

  4. Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

  5. Introduction • “Godhead in Bible 3 times: Acts 17:29; Romans 1:20; Colossians 2:9. • This doctrine covered under heading of “Trinity” in field of theology. • Word “trinity” is not in the Bible. • “Trinity” comes from Latin word trinus which means “triple.”

  6. Introduction • Our use of word “trinity” we mean the tri-personality of the One Divine God; that is, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. • NOT speaking about “tritheism” – three distinct gods, as Muslims accuse us. • ARE speaking of three separate Persons who have the Divine Essence or Deity.

  7. Introduction • IMPOSSIBLE for mere humans to adequately illustrate the Godhead. • May examine qualities only possessed by Deity, such as:

  8. Qualities of Deity • Spirit, John 4:24. • Boundless – not confined by space, time or matter, 1 Kings 8:27.

  9. 1 KINGS 8:27 "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!”

  10. Qualities of Deity • Spirit, John 4:24. • Boundless – not confined by space, time or matter, 1 Kings 8:27. • Eternal, Psalm 90:2.

  11. Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

  12. Qualities of Deity • Spirit, John 4:24. • Boundless – not confined by space, time or matter, 1 Kings 8:27. • Eternal, Psalm 90:2. • Self-sufficient, Exodus 3:14.

  13. EXODUS 3:14 And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' " God has NO NEEDS beyond Himself! He is the eternal first cause who Himself is UNCAUSED!

  14. Qualities of Deity • Spirit, John 4:24. • Boundless – not confined by space, time or matter, 1 Kings 8:27. • Eternal, Psalm 90:2. • Self-sufficient, Exodus 3:14. • Unchangeable in: • His nature, Psalm 102:27. • His counsel, Psalm 33:11.

  15. Psalm 102:27 But You are the same, And Your years will have no end. Psalm 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.

  16. Plurality in OT • The OT stresses God’s unity. • Many hints given regarding plurality in the Godhead. • OT does NOT reveal a triune plurality (three in one). • Plural nouns and pronouns with singular verbs are applied to God in OT.

  17. Plurality scriptures in OT • “In the beginning God [Elohim, plural] created [bara, singular] the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). • “Then God said, Let Us [plural] make man in Our [plural] image…” (Genesis 1:26). • “Hear, O Israel: The LORD [singular] our God [Elohim, plural], the LORD [singular] is One (Deuteronomy 6:4: the plural is ONE).

  18. Plurality in NT • Numerical mystery of OT revealed in NT as triune. • Many scriptural proofs for co-equality in the One Divine Essence: • Father, Son & Holy Spirit are eternal.

  19. Father, Son & Holy Spirit are Eternal • Father: Deuteronomy 33:27 The eternal God is your refuge, And underneath are the everlasting arms; He will thrust out the enemy from before you, And will say, 'Destroy!’ • Son: Revelation 1:17 …I am the First and the Last. • Holy Spirit: Hebrews 9:14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

  20. Plurality in NT • Numerical mystery of OT revealed in NT as triune. • Many scriptural proofs for co-equality in the One Divine Essence: • Father, Son & Holy Spirit are eternal. • Father, Son & Holy Spirit recognized as God.

  21. Father, Son & Holy Spirit are recognized as God (Deity) • Father: 1 Peter 1:2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, • Son: Hebrews 1:8 But to the Son He says: "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER; A SCEPTER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS IS THE SCEPTER OF YOUR KINGDOM (quoting Psalm 45:6). • Holy Spirit: Acts 5:3-4 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? (4) While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

  22. Plurality in NT • Numerical mystery of OT revealed in NT as triune. • Many scriptural proofs for co-equality in the One Divine Essence: • Father, Son & Holy Spirit are eternal. • Father, Son & Holy Spirit recognized as God. • Father, Son & Holy Spirit have created.

  23. Father, Son & Holy Spirit have created • Father: 1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him… • Son: Colossians 1:16 For by Him [Christ]all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. • Holy Spirit: Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

  24. • Father, Son & Holy Spirit are omnipresent.

  25. Father, Son & Holy Spirit are omnipresent • Father: Jeremiah 23:24 Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?" says the LORD; "Do I not fill heaven and earth?" says the LORD. • Son: Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. • Holy Spirit: Psalm 139:7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

  26. Three mentioned together, yet separate MATTHEW 3:16-17When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. (17) And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

  27. Three mentioned together, yet separate 2 CORINTHIANS 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. MATTHEW 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  28. Conclusion • Man cannot fully comprehend the triune nature of Deity. • Must accept Bible proof that it is TRUE. • There is only One, Perfect, Eternal, Divine essence. • In this Divine essence, there are three equal persons called God; ALL possess Divine atributes. • There is also a recognized order among the three Persons that DOES NOT take away from their equality. • The Three agree on our salvation: will YOU obey?
