  3. George HW Bush Biography "If anyone tells you that America's best days are behind her, they're looking the wrong way.“

  4. Vice President • Served two terms under President Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) • Responsibilities that proved invaluable • Represented administration in international affairs • Making many contacts and establishing • relationships • Involved in the administration’s foreign • policy discussions

  5. Major Events during Presidency “This will not stand.” – in response to Iraqi invasion of Kuwait

  6. Bush’s Leadership • Not a great communicator • “The Great Compromiser” • Reneged on campaign promise of “No new taxes” • Surrounded himself with great people • General Colin Powell • National Security Advisor • Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff • General Norman “Stormin’ Norman/The Bear” Schwarzkopf • Cabinet members • James Baker, Secretary of State • Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense

  7. Qualities I Most Admire • Lead in business, elected office, appointed office, international relations, and battle • Loyal • Video on GHWB • Democratic in leadership • Able to build relationships with foreign leaders • Able to get consensus of Congress and allies in order to pursue retaliation of Iraqi invasion • Self-confident • “If I am elected president, I will never apologize for the United States. I will strengthen her and make her a beacon of freedom and liberty!”

  8. Surrounded himself with the right people • General Colin Powell • General Norman Schwarzkopf • James Baker, Secretary of State • Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense • A visionary • casting a vision for the country when he took over as President • “America today is a proud, free nation, decent and civil, a place we cannot help but love. We know in our hearts, not loudly and proudly, but as a simple fact, that this country has meaning beyond what we see, and that our strength is a force for good.”

  9. Showed he could be a strong leader when in a crisis • Shooting of Ronald Reagan (a show of humility, loyalty and respect) • Bush was in TX & was advised upon landing to proceed directly to the White House via helicopter and he responded, “Only the President lands on the South Lawn.” • Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait provided Bush his most serious crisis and his finest hour as president. His masterful diplomacy fashioned a broad international coalition against Iraq. Justifying the U.S. response, Bush cited the unprovoked invasion of defenseless Kuwait, Iraq’s desire to control a large portion of the world’s oil reserves, and Iraq’s growing nuclear-weapons potential. In January 1991 Bush asked Congress for all necessary means to expel Iraq from Kuwait. He received congressional approval to use force, and the U.S.-led allies launched a punishing aerial assault on strategic sites in Iraq. In a ground war in February, lasting just 100 hours, allied forces drove the Iraqis from Kuwait. Bush’s popularity rose to historic highs for a president, but he drew some criticism for ordering a cease-fire before Iraq’s president, Saddam Hussein, was ousted.

  10. He takes responsibility for actions without apology • After the ground war had begun, I announced to the nation that the war was over. I was convinced, as were all our Arab friends and allies, that Hussein would be overthrown once the war ended. That did not and has still not happened. We underestimated his brutality and cruelty to his own people and the stranglehold he has on his country. We were disappointed, but I still do not regret my decision to end the war when we did. I do not believe in what I call mission creep. Our mission, as mandated by the UN, was clear: end the aggression. We did that. We liberated Kuwait and destroyed Hussein’s military machine so that he could no longer threaten his neighbors.

  11. He’s not arrogant but confident • “I come before you and assume the Presidency at a moment rich with promise. We live in a peaceful, prosperous time, but we can make it better. For in man’s heart, if not in fact, the day of the dictator is over. “ • With the fall of the USSR, Bush did not gloat or declare victory • He’s humble • The first act of President was a prayer

  12. He is a Level 5 leader – Executive • Not boastful, unwavering resolve to produce best long term results, no matter how difficult • Before ordering our troops into battle in Kuwait, I thought long and hard about casualties, or, as our severest critics would put it-body bags. But as I pondered that horrible question, I also thought of unchecked aggression, of what would happen if the butcher of Baghdad could emerge the hero. What would that have meant for tomorrow? Announcement of Ground Action

  13. Bush Quotes • “We meet on democracy’s front porch, a good place to talk as neighbors and as friends. For this is a day when our nation is made whole, when our differences, for a moment, are suspended. And my first act as President is a prayer.” • "We know what works: Freedom works. We know what's right: Freedom is right. We know how to secure a more just and prosperous life for man on Earth: through free markets, free speech, free elections, and the exercise of free will unhampered by the state.“

  14. "For more than forty years, America and its allies held communism in check and insured that democracy would continue to exist. And today, with communism crumbling, our aim must be to insure democracy's advance, to take the lead in forging peace and freedom's best hope, a great and growing commonwealth of free nations.“

  15. Legacy • All the above • 2ndin US History where father and son are elected to become President • Not since 1834: John Adams & John Quincy Adams • 2nd person to moved directly from Vice President to President of USA • Martin Van Buren • USS George HW Bush Aircraft Carrier (CVN-77)
