Capacity Building Workshop for Climate Change Mitigation in Maritime Shipping Industry- November 27, 2018 Prof Victoria Wambui Ngumi, PhD Vice Chancellor Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Email: vc@jkuat.ac.ke Website: www.jkuat.ac.ke Setting Trends in Higher Education, Research and Innovation

  2. JKUAT as part of the Maritime Education Training • Pleased to be part of this very important conference that seeks to galvanize global consensus and build capacity for climate change mitigation in the maritime shipping industry • In 2010, JKUAT took the bold step to be part of the Maritime Education and Training (MET) when we launched the BSc Marine Engineering program • The Department of Marine engineering and Maritime Operations was then established in 2015 • This was due to the immense potential of Kenya’s blue economy in socio-economic development. • Participated in the skills audit in the maritime sector for the Northern Corridor Integrated Project in 2017. Setting Trends in Higher Education, Research and Innovation

  3. JKUAT as part of the Maritime Education Training President Kenyatta inspects a guard of honour mounted by JKUAT marine engineering students in March 2015 Setting Trends in Higher Education, Research and Innovation

  4. JKUAT as the host to MTCC-Africa • In 2017, JKUAT in collaboration with Kenya Port Authority and Kenya Maritime authority won a competitive bid to host the regional Maritime Technology Cooperation for the African region in a bid to improving capability of Africa’s maritime sector players. Objectives of MTCC-Africa • Champion regional capacity building • Promote the uptake of low-carbon technologies and operations • Raise awareness about policies, strategies and measures for the reduction of Greenhouse gas & other emissions. • Demonstrate pilot-scale system for collecting data and reporting on ships’ fuel consumption. • Implementing strategies to sustain the impact of MTCC results Setting Trends in Higher Education, Research and Innovation

  5. JKUAT as the host to MTCC-Africa • Since operationalization, MTCC Africa has provided a platform for Research and Training in maritime related fields such as mitigation of Green House Gas Emissions from the Maritime Shipping Industry and alternative energy sources and use. • Centre is currently spearheading two research projects namely: • Uptake of Low Carbon Technologies through provision of On Shore Power Supply (OPS) at the Port of Mombasa; • And a pilot project on fuel consumption and emissions data collection and reporting and air quality measurement at the port of Mombasa. • The Centre intends to upscale its activities all over Africa in the next one year. Setting Trends in Higher Education, Research and Innovation

  7. Call to action • To sustain the milestones achieved by MTCC-Africa through financial support by the European Union and technical guidance of IMO, the Centre intends to Upscale its activities all over Africa in the next one year. Key among these are: • Jointly planned Capacity Building Projects to facilitate tooling and skilling of professionals in the maritime shipping industry • Specific research activities in ship energy efficiency, climate change and low carbon technologies • Pilot projects in compliance with Greenhouse gas targets as per the 2015 Paris agreement • With this, I call upon the delegates to proactively partner with us in order to deliver on this very noble mission beyond the Project’s lifespan. Setting Trends in Higher Education, Research and Innovation

  8. Conclusion • As an aspiring centre of excellence in maritime training for Africa and beyond, JKUAT is committed to full and successful implementation of MTCC-Africa. • On behalf of hosting partners, I wish to appreciate the technical support from IMO towards the implementation of the Centre. Our sincere gratitude also goes to the State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs together with other government departments and agencies for steadfastly supporting this initiative.
