  2. The Oregon Country • Located between Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains • Includes… • Oregon • Washington • Idaho • Plus parts of… • Montana and Wyoming • Also contained about half of British Colombia

  3. Rivalry in the Northwest • Four nations claimed Oregon Country • United States-Robert Gray discovered Colombia River • Great Britain-they also explored Colombia River • Spain- explored Pacific coast • Russia- has settlements that extended into Oregon

  4. The Adams-Onis Treaty • America wanted Oregon for a route to the Pacific • John Quincy Adams made a treaty with Spain • The treaty gave us Oregon and set new limits on Spanish Territory

  5. Joint Occupation • John Q. Adams and Britain agreed for joint occupation over Oregon • Joint occupation, people from to countries can live together without a border • U.S.A and Britain could not agree on a border line, so they extended the joint occupation

  6. Mountain Men • The first people in America were fur traders, also known as Mountain Men • They trapped beaver • Lived in the mountains • And gradually began to take on Native American ways • Had to live cautiously and resourcefully

  7. Whitman Mission • Dr. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman were missionaries • Worked with Cayuse tribe near Washington • White settlers brought measles to Cayuse tribe and killed many • Whitman's were blamed for epidemic and were murdered

The Oregon Trail • The panic of 1837 brought down economy causing people to come to Oregon • The desire to move to Oregon was called “Oregon fever” • The trip the Pioneers took was considered the “Great migration” • The pioneers who left their homes to “migrate” to Oregon are called Emigrants • Pioneers used large wagons called prairie schooners to get to Oregon

  9. Manifest Destiny • Mission of the 1800s: Spread freedom by occupying the entire continent • After the mission was changed, John O’ Sullivan said • “It is Americas Manifest Destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us.”

  10. Fifty-Four Forty or Fight • Americans wanted all of Oregon • In the 1844 election, James K. Polk supported this demand • The Democrats said the phrase “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight” • The border line Fifty-Four Forty would give us all of Oregon • Britain would not agree, so we compromised at 49 degrees North
