  2. Introduction Bella Costa works as an executive in Helios Inc. She had joined Helios about a month ago. In her new role at Helios, Bella has to constantly learn new processes and software tools to cater to the demands of the various clients of Helios.

  3. Introduction To help Bella cope up with learning of the new processes and tools, William Mitchinson, Bella’s boss, has organized various training sessions, in co-ordination with the Learning and Development Department at Helios. Ever since her school days, Bella has been an average student.

  4. Introduction She has always found it difficult to learn new things. She just does not enjoy the process of learning and finds it difficult to concentrate and learn well. Hence, Bella finds it very challenging to cope up with the things being taught in the training sessions. She finds it very difficult to learn.

  5. Introduction So, she shares her dilemma with her boss, William. William arranges for a training session on ‘Learning to Learn’ for Bella. This training session on ‘Learning to Learn’ is aimed at helping Bella to find the learning process very easy, enjoyable and effective.

Introduction • In the training session of ‘Learning to Learn’, Bella will get to learn the following: • Methods through which she can increase her concentration levels • Ways to reduce her distractions and interruptions • Ways to plan and organize her learning • Methods to increase her memory and retention • Ways to enjoy the learning process and reduce stress

  7. Introduction ‘Learning’ is a part of life. It is an ongoing process and people will learn new things at every stage of their lives. ‘Learning’ is a part of everyone’s life, whether it is a student, homemaker, professional, retired person etc. People from all walks of life will face opportunities where they will need to learn something new.

  8. Introduction Therefore, if a person does not enjoy the process of learning, the learning would become a great challenge. Also, it is important that since learning is such a crucial part of everyone’s lives, each person should know how to ‘learn well’. Let us look at ‘Learning to Learn’ in detail.

  9. Need for Learning Today’s world is an era of knowledge where human beings are valued greatly as high-value assets. In organizations that are continually growing and evolving, training and learning programs help employees to provide the much needed response to changing environment. Learning plays a pivotal role in the development of any individual. In today’s competitive world, it is crucial that organizations should build and sustain competencies that would provide them with a competitive advantage over its competitors.

Learning Styles and their Importance • It is very important as a learner to understand the various learning styles that are used by individuals to learn. • Learning styles have a major influence on the way an individual learns. • Your preferred learning style guides the manner in which you internally represent experiences, manner in which you recall information and the words you choose.

Role of Will Power in Learning • Will Power refers to the natural desire of most people to be in personal control of their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. • It begins shortly after birth and continues throughout life. • It is determined by the skills, beliefs and attitudes, and knowledge as well as opportunities to exercise personal control. • All persons have the desire and are capable of some degree of will power.

  15. Role of Concentration in Learning So, a person in an old environment may fail to notice things that are obvious and right in front of him. His brain fails to process information as the person has lost his attention to details. Therefore, it is crucial that in any environment, whether old or new, a person should make an effort to consciously concentrate and focus his attention back to the environment and not be slack.

  16. Techniques of Improving Memory When you study and learn, you are making use of your ‘Short-term’ or ‘Working Memory’. Research Studies have found that capacity of the short-term or working memory may be increased by ‘chunking’. For example: To remember a set of letters such as follows: G-C-J-U-X-B-D-J-B-J-C-O You could improve the short-term memory retention of the above letters by chunking it into four chunks as follows: GCJ UXB DJB JCO

  19. Role of Routine in Learning Creating a Routine means scheduling time effectively so that the right time is allocated to the right learning activity. It is crucial that you learn to create practical regimes for learning as it is of prime essence for gaining success in the learning process Effective routines help you to learn better, meet set learning goals on time and minimize stress.

Use a daily schedule and weekly diary Prioritize and set achievable targets What to Do When You Get Stuck Revise targets There are various strategies that you can use to try to get out of learning situations where you may have got stuck. Remember that there is no way to avoid getting stuck. It is something you have to overcome and get out of yourself.
