  1. Paediatric Orthopaedics (Children's Orthopaedic Surgery) is the speciality that deals with ailments or problems affecting the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints and related soft tissues - muscles, tendons, ligaments) in children and adolescents. In the case of children, the overwhelming need is for the child to be cared for as a whole, and therefore it is necessary for CHILDREN'S ORTHOPAEDICS to be considered a complete speciality on its own. Our understanding of the uniqueness of a growing child makes it necessary that a child is not just treated as a little adult. Centre for Paediatric Orthopaedics & Disabilities (CPOD) is an institution which is set up to provide high quality, evidence based care for all Orthopaedic problems which affect the growing child. Paediatric hip surgery Appropriate and timely management of these problems can avoid potentially debilitating consequences during later years of life. Unlike adult hip disorders, childhood hip problems may not always present with pain and often end up being detected late. Children usually present with a limp which may or may not be associated with pain. At CPOD, we have the necessary experience and expertise in the management of paediatric hip disorders to achieve the best possible outcomes. Guided growth Correction of angular deformities in the lower limbs can be achieved gradually by the principle of guided growth using various techniques of epiphysiodesis. When there is growth remaining, correction of deformity by guided growth causes less morbidity than traditional osteotomies.

  2. Limb Deficiencies Limb deficiencies are conditions wherein either a portion or whole of the lower / upper limb fails to form normally during pregnancy. The limb is either reduced in size or is missing, resulting in an obvious deformity. Children with limb deficiencies will face a variety of challenges and difficulties involving activities of daily living including self care and mobility. Treatment will depend on the child’s age, the extent and type of deficiency as well as the child / family’s views on certain types of procedures and therapies. Developmental Dysplasia of Hip (DDH) Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip is the term given to a spectrum of pathologies which can affect the hip either at birth or subsequently during infancy and childhood. Characteristically the hip shows variable amount of instability as well as dysplasia, ranging from acetabular dysplasia (poorly developed or shallow socket) to subluxation to dislocation. Treatment of DDH varies depending on the age at which diagnosis is made. Complexity of treatment increases as the child attains walking age.
