  2. Walking • WALK CONFIDENTLY! (unless roles demand otherwise) • Maintain good posture • Shoulders square and chest high • Keep axis of body directly over feet • Think “tall”

  3. Sitting • Make sitting appear NATURAL • How?

How to sit on stage • Locate chair (without being obvious) • Decide the best route to the chair (sometimes you may have to move around people and obstacles) • Turn so that your calf touches the chair, place the calf of the other leg against the chair, and sit • Keep back of spine at 90 degree angle to the seat – Most of the time you will sit forward in a chair (unless it calls for your character to lean back)

  5. Rest hands on lap or on arms of the chair (DO NOT CROSS – restricts breathing and causes you to look tense) • You may cross feet at ankles, but DO NOT cross legs, spread your feet apart, or rest hands or elbows on knees • When standing, lead with chest not head. Keep your weight balanced on the balls of your feet. (DO NOT hold on to the arms of the chair or push yourself up unless your character is elderly or weak.) • Take a deep breath while rising

  6. Crossing • Crossing: Moving from one place onstage to another • Lead with the foot farther from the audience • Entering from stage right, start with ______ foot • Entering from stage left, start with ______ foot

  7. How to fall • Divide body into segments, and lower each segment to the floor Head Torso & Arms Hips Thighs Legs

  11. Facial Expressions • Happiness :-) • Eyes squint • Brows lift • Mouth curves up, sometimes with lips parting

  12. Facial Expressions • Sadness :-( • Eyes narrow and lids drop • Outer brow turns downward • Mouth turns down • Facial muscles sag

  13. Facial Expressions • Anger >:-| • Eyes narrow considerably • Brows furrow • Mouth twists downward • Lips sometimes curl out and down into a sneer • Jaw drops and sets firmly
