  3. Course Plan

  4. Part I General Information • Introduction of MARPOL Annex VI • Annex VI-Technical and Operational implications • FO standards; Fuel Properties and Effects;

  5. Why Annex VI? Air pollution from ships in the world • The ship’s part of air pollution represents only 1.8% of global air pollution from CO2/CO2 equivalents • Shipping transports more than 65% of all goods ------due to very energy efficient!

  6. But… … • The ship’s air pollution increases compared to other sources: • SO2/SOX 78% of land based releases in 2001 • NOx68% of land based releases in 2001 • Therefore: • International agreements (conventions/regional) • IMO (MARPLO annex VI) • EU regulations • EPA (US)

  7. Annex VI Introduction: • NOx engine emission levels-- regulation 13 • SO x: -- regulation 14 • Sulphur capacity 4.5% • Sox emission control area (SECA0 1.5% • End of pipe treatment alternative 6g sox/KWH • Vapour control system for tankers --regulation 15 • Ozone depleting substances --regulation 12 • Incinerators --regulation 16 • Fuel oil quality --regulation 18

  8. International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate-IAPP • Required for vessels of 400 GRT and above • Keel laid on or after 19 may 2005 • Ships keel laid before 19 may 2005 shall have certificate at first scheduled dry docking, or no later then 3 years after into force • The IAPP certificate will be issued following an initial survey carried out by the Flag • Administration or by a recognized organization (e.g. DNV) on behalf of the Flag Administration, confirming compliance with MARPOL Annex VI. For ships with the flag of an Administration that have not yet ratified Annex VI, a Certificate of Compliance with Annex VI may be issued by DNV. • Annex VI also requires diesel engines (as described above) to carry individual certificates with regard to NOx emissions, named Engine International Air Pollution Prevention (EIAPP) Certificates.

  9. Annex VI Surveys Vessel shall be subject to: • An initial survey • before the ship is put into service or before the IAPPCertificate is issued for the first time. • Periodical surveys • at intervals specified by the Administration, but notexceeding five years. • A minimum of one intermediate survey • during the period of validity of thecertificate.

  10. Annex VI Requirements • Regulation 12 • Emissions from Ozone depleting substances from refrigeratingplants and fire fighting equipment. • Regulation 13 • Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines • Regulation 14 • Sulphur Oxide (SOx) emissions from ships

  11. Annex VI Requirements • Regulation 15 • Volatile Organic compounds emissions from cargo oil tanks ofoil tankers • Regulation 16 • Emissions from shipboard incinerators. • Regulation 18 • Fuel Oil quality.
