Am I Bovvered? Engaging girls in physical activity interventions FerhanaHashem, Jenny Billings & Jan Macvarish Email:F.Hashem@kent.ac.uk
Project Aims and Objectives Aim of Phase One: Explore the factors that motivate and create barriers to 11-12 & 14-15 year old girls engaging in regular physical activity (Jan.08) Aim of Phase Two: Develop and implement activities chosen by inactive 11-12 & 14-15 year old girls with the support of a multi-agency team (Sept. 08) Aim of Phase Three: Evaluate the impact of the project, examining factors associated with young girls’ engagement in physical exercise (July 09)
Fun and socialising with friends • PE = a break from the classroom • Good teachers: Authority and enthusiasm • Being ‘healthy’ = weight control • Avoiding being ‘big’ • Being ‘big’ = embarrassment, teasing, dropping out of sport • Good facilities • ‘Feeling good’ • Trying something new Phase One: FindingsMotivations - In school
Motivations and Barriers - Out of school • Fun, socialising, avoiding boredom, weight control • High dependence on parents: Money, transport, time, enthusiasm • Self-conscious exercising alone, some fears of being out and about • Diminishing opportunities for informal ‘playing out’
Phase Three: Research & Evaluation • Collection of baseline data before and after program of activities (pre- and post- questionnaires) • Pupil participant focus groups (3 in total) • Parental focus group (1 in total) • Follow-up ‘attrition’ survey for pupils who have withdrawn
‘For me taking part in physical activity would be ENJOYABLE...’
‘My parents would encourage me to exercise on a regular basis...”
