  1. White Space Spectrum Potential to Deliver Broadband Wireless Access Presented by: Chris Whiteley, Director of Business Development xG Technology, Inc. Jan. 22, 2010

  2. About xG Technology, Inc. • Developed an IP cellular network optimized for the delivery of mass-scale mobile VoIP and broadband • First end-to-end mobile VoIP solution • Rapid Detect and Avoid (DAA) algorithm capable of outmaneuvering the interference found in the 902-928 MHz band • Spectrum covers 924 million people • Roadmap to whitespace spectrum services “When you realize that this company may have found a way to take a frequency riddled with wireless garbage and turn it into a fully functioning wireless voice and data network you start to see how much of a game changer this could be for the wireless industry.” –Rich Tehrani, CEO TMCnet on xG Technology

  3. Extending Unlicensed Knowledgebase • Network operating in • densely populated • interference-rich environment • FCC approved base stations transmitting at 1 Watt • Pilot network details • 30 square miles • 111,000 pops covered

  4. Whitespace Potential for BWA • Migrate xMax broadband wireless access to whitespace • Shift bandwidth intensive Internet access service off of unlicensed 900 MHz • Lower frequencies will benefit wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) by extending the service range • Fixed devices may operate at up to 4 Watts

  5. Whitespace Devices • Wideband receivers may dictate large or multiple antennae • Expect larger form factor initially i.e. desktop modems, tablets • Possible leverage of InCognito™ platform by Cambridge Consultants • Highly complex cognitive ‘spectral sensing’ radio technology which, until now, has only been used in defense and security application. • Platform enables whitespace radios to quickly and accurately detect and avoid other broadcasts.

  6. VoIP over Whitespace • Not aware of any development for VoIP over whitespace • While voice doesn't require much bandwidth, it requires error-free delivery • The number one killer of voice traffic is network latency and jitter • xMax RF and MAC optimized for the delivery of mass-scale mobile VoIP and broadband Internet services • A scalable SIP-centric MAC protocol for high QoS mobile VoIP • No greater than 30ms latency from the handset to the basestation. • End-to-end system optimization with enhanced SIP and RTP protocols capable of operating robustly over mobile wireless links.

  7. Regulatory & Political • Use of whitespace is contingent upon lack of interference • Supported by White Space Coalition • Microsoft, Google, Dell, HP, Intel, Philips, Earthlink and Samsung • Opposed by CTIA representing the wireless industry which feels that the spectrum should be auctioned • Opposed by the TV broadcasters, healthcare equipment vendors and wireless microphone users in the music and sports industries
