    2. Why Are We Here Today? Individuals with severe mental illness and substance misuse issues can benefit from insight oriented group therapy utilizing experiential therapy techniques. SMI population have same life issues as general population Yet: Lack of research on effective group therapy with individuals with severe persistent mental illness Common belief that insight oriented therapy is not possible with population Traditional talk therapy groups are difficult with this population Brianna and KathyBrianna and Kathy

Motivational interviewing principles (using strengths, reinforcing self-efficacy, and reinforcement of change talk/behaviors) guides to group members to see beyond their mental illness Person center treatment planning meets the group member where they are in the change process and is open to their personal interpretation of recovery Experiential processes allow exploration of personal recovery goals Group members have insight into problems but path in the change process is different What We Have Found
