  2. Misuse of Drugs Act • The main piece of legislation dealing with drugs • In work since 1971 • Classifies the controlled drugs • Sets the penalties for possession and supply

  3. Drugs subject to this Act are known as „controlled drugs“

  4. Classification • Class A drugs • Class B drugs • Class C drugs

  5. Class A • Include :ecstasy, LSD, heroin, cocaine, crack, magic mushrooms, methyl amphetamine, other amphetamines prepared for injection • Penalties for possession :Up to 7 years in prison or an unlimited fine. Or both. • Penalties for dealing :Up to life in prison or an unlimited fine. Or both.

  6. Class B • Include :cannabis, amphetamines, methylphenidate (Ritalin), pholcodine • Penalties for possession :Up to 5 years in prison or an unlimited fine. Or both • Penalties for dealing :Up to 14 years in prison or an unlimited fine. Or both.

  7. Class C • Include :tranquilisers, some painkillers, GHB, ketamine, steroids • Penalties for possession :Up to 2 years in prison or an unlimited fine. Or both • Penalties for dealing :Up to 14 years in prison or an unlimited fine. Or both.
