Starter • What do the following words mean? • Poltergeist • Sorcerer • Alchemist • Astrology • Geomancy a ghost or spirit supposed to manifest its presence by noises, knockings, etc a person who practices sorcery; black magician; wizard. a person who is versed in or practices an older form of chemistry and speculative philosophy. the study that assumes and attempts to interpret the influence of the heavenly bodies on human affairs. prophecy from the pattern made when a handful of earth is cast down or dots are drawn at random and connected with lines

  4. Let’s read Chapter 3 (up to page 57).

  5. Questions to Consider • Why is James quiet at breakfast that morning? • Look at page 52/32. Record two ways in which James thinks children are like ghosts.

  6. Questions to Consider • What clues does Lively give us to show that the ghost is from a different (older) time? • Consider what he says and how he says it.

  7. TASK • James keeps a personal journal about each days events. • Pretend you are James. • Write in your personal journal about how you feel about what happened today.
