  2. Basic Facts • Maghreb means “land farthest west.” (Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco) • The people in all of these countries are Arabic-speaking Muslims.

Landscape of north Africa • coastal areas have a Mediterranean climate. • Away from the coast is the arid climate of the Sahara: largest hot desert in the world • no navigable rivers • ergs, large expanses of dunes, form due to no vegetation • plants in these areas adapt through their roots and leaves. • Traditional way of life, many people live on oases in the interior: • central area saved for farming • houses are built around the farming area in a circle

Blend of Cultures • Camels brought from Asia allowed peoples north and south of the Sahara to trade using caravans. • There is a blend of African, European, and Asian cultures • Berbers - original inhabitants of North Africa • Phoenicians, Romans, and the Arabs have controlled it • Muammar Gaddafi has been the dictator of Libya since 1969. He was killed in a recent uprising
