  1. Preferring One Another Turn to: Romans 12:10 & 15:1-3

  2. Biblical Fact You are either in the family of God or you are NOT—those are the only two divisions of people on the planet.

  3. Last Week Two Major Directives Romans 12:10 • Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; • in honor preferring one another;

  4. Our Goal Love each other in the same way brothers and sisters love in a family. This means we will prefer one another!

  5. Our Text Verse Is this an isolated directive? Romans 12:10 • Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; • in honour preferring one another;

  6. Question Before I make a big deal of the application of this verse can I find this truth throughout the Bible?

  7. Turn to Romans 13:7

  8. Turn to Romans 14:7-8

  9. Turn to Romans 15:1-3

  10. Philippians 2:3 • Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. • Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

  11. 1 Peter 2:17 • Honor all men. • Love the brotherhood. • Fear God. • Honor the king.

  12. Finally—just the Opposite • 1 Timothy 5:21 • I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

  13. Application Question: How deep and how wide and how long is the application of “in honor preferring one another?”

  14. Application • Preferring “One Another” • Spouse • Immediate Family • Church Family • Extended Family • All Men

  15. Marriage …wives should submit to their husbands. Husbands love your wives, as Christ loved the church… Eph 5:24-25 This is: In honor preferring one another.

  16. In the Marriage • 1 Peter 3:7 • Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

  17. Application In the Marriage Husbands Wives

  18. Ephesians 5:25 The sacrificial death of Jesus Christ is the ultimate in preferring one another! • Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

  19. Dads: How do you honor and prefer your children above yourself? Application

  20. Application Genesis 13:1-9

  21. Application What does “preferring one another” look like in the family of God?

  22. Look Back at Romans 12:4-6ff

  23. Application In what tangible ways do you honor and prefer others in the body of Christ? Can we all agree that weekly attendance of 1 hour on the pew does not equal “in honor preferring one another?”

  24. Question Is it possible to honor and prefer others without sacrificing something?

  25. Question How is giving $ to the church preferring one another? See Vs. 13

  26. Romans 12:13 • Distributing [contribute] to the necessity of saints; • [be] given to hospitality.

  27. Question How does in “honor preferring one another” relate to behavioral choices?

  28. Two Options • Try to prescribe rules for all questionable issues not clearly outlined in the Bible. • Make gray area choices based on biblical principles like “in honor preferring one another.”

  29. Application How does in honor preferring one another relate to women adorn themselves in modest apparel?

  30. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 • In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; • But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

  31. Defining Modest Q: Who decides what is modest? • observing the proprieties of dress and behavior : • decent

  32. Question Can we agree upon some standards of modesty when it comes to preferring our brothers in Christ?

  33. Swimming Attire • Men • Speedo bikini trunks • Women • 2 piece bikini suit Are either of these bathing suits helping our brother (or sister) keep a pure thought life?

  34. Someone Says: Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (freedom).

  35. Application What happens when my freedom to wear a two piece bikini bathing suit becomes a stumbling block to my brother in Christ? Am I willing to honor and prefer my brother above myself?

  36. Someone from a pew says: I don’t want to be in a legalistic church where there isn’t freedom.

  37. Translation I don’t want to have to prefer my brother over myself.

  38. Galatians 5:13 Let’s look at the next verse. • For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; • only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, • but by love serve one another.

  39. Galatians 5:14 This means: If I were in my neighbor’s situation, gender, capacity, etc. how would I want to be treated? • For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

  40. Another Issue Alcohol Consumption

  41. Only Two Options Alcohol: Course of Action #1 I choose to completely abstain. Alcohol: Course of Action #2 I will be exceptionally careful, selective, and very limited so as to never create a chance to offend a brother (or sister) or hurt my Christian testimony.

  42. Conclusion Where do you need to honor and preferring one another?”
