PAPUAN CULTURE • People came from different cultural background • Each person is unique individual & desires respect • Be aware of any thought influenced by stereotypes! • Some things about Papuan Culture in GENERAL: • Some are cautious towards other Indonesians • Make special effort to be friendly – Don’t consider them inferior • Demonstrate willingness to mix with them – Who ever you are • Family system are complex and strong – Be friendly and you will be protected by all member of a tribe or even between all papuans

PAPUAN CULTURE (More) • Open and spontaneous nature – They laugh and talk loudly • Do not like to be embarrassed – They may react strongly • Relation to the indigenous Bintuni Bay’s people: • Do not make agreement or promises if there are • any uncertainties • - Only visit the villages if you are accompanied by • a Community Affairs Field Team (CAFT)

COMMUNICATING CROSS - CULTURALLY • You always have a choice in the way you communicate with another person • The way you think directly and indirectly affects the way you • communicate with people • Everybody would like to be treated with respect and shown courtesy. • If someone is not polite or patient with other people, remain • patient and polite, this way may change their attitude • Proactive in ‘bridging’ any gaps between people because of • culture. Follow your natural instincts and think positively about others
