What is ‘Motor’ Fitness ?. Motor Fitness is also known as ‘Skill Related Fitness’ and this gives us a clue as to how these qualities help us when playing a game. Skill is the learned ability to carry out the result you want with maximum certainty and efficiency.

  1. What is ‘Motor’ Fitness ? Motor Fitness is also known as ‘Skill Related Fitness’ and this gives us a clue as to how these qualities help us when playing a game. Skill is the learned ability to carry out the result you want with maximum certainty and efficiency. There are 6 parts of skill related fitness and you have probably heard of at least some of these while taking part in your P.E. lessons. On the next page there will be 6 words and 6 definitions. Can you accurately match the right part of motor fitness to the right definition? Write the single words in pencil so that you can change things easily if you get one wrong ! Write them in pen when you are given the right answers.

  4. C oordination Is the ability of the body and senses to work together to produce fluent & controlled movement This tennis serve relies heavily on Coordination as the eyes, hand and body must work smoothly to control the swing of the racket to meet the ball in the centre of the racket.

Athletics sprint events begin with a sequence of events: • Gun goes off • Sound travels from gun to ear • ear registers sound, sends impulse to brain • brain processes sound, sends signal to start running. • signal is received by muscles; sprinter goes Reaction Time is the ability to respond to an event or stimulus happening in the shortest possible time Fact: Some top class sprinters can respond to the starting gun going off in 0.13 seconds and have extremely fast REACTION TIMES. The ruler drop test is a good way to measure Reaction Time

  6. Agilityis the ability to change direction and stop quickly In the following example Ronaldo uses his Agility to beat a defender. Watch how he moves his body first to the right then swerves past the defender quickly in the opposite direction.

Testing your Agility • The Illinois Agility Run Test is conducted as follows: • The athlete lies face down on the floor at the start point • On the assistant's command the athlete jumps to his/her feet and sprints around the cones to the finish • The assistant records the total time taken from his command to the athlete completing the course.

Power is the ability of the muscles to transfer energy or apply force as quickly as possible Testing Power -The Sergeant Jump 1 2 3 In this Basketball practice the coach is trying to develop Explosive Strength or Power in the leg muscles. 1 Reach up and record score ‘A’ on the wall marker. 2 Bend knees and swing arms to help gain height 3 Jump as high as possible and touch the scale. Balance is the ability to hold a position without falling over Testing balance – the Flamingo Test • description / procedure: the person stands on one leg for as long as possible. • scoring: time length of time person can stay in balance position • equipment required: flat, non-slip surface, stopwatch, paper and pencil, bench • variations: to increase the degree of difficulty, the test can be conducted with the person having their arms either by their sides, held out horizontally, or on their head. You could also conduct the test with their eyes closed for each of these variations too. A bench can be upturned and used to balance on to increase difficulty. Some Gymnastic skills make great demands on your ability to maintain stability
