  5. What is Physics? • Physics deals with the way the universe works at the most basic level • This means that the same physics laws apply to a snowflake falling, the eruption of a volcano, the explosion of a distant star and the flight of a butterfly Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics B. Beiersdorf – University of Notre Dame

  6. Then, what is Particle Physics? ParticlePhysics deals with the smallest, most basic particles of the universe What is the smallest thing you know of? The atom is made of even smaller particles. • Protons and neutrons contain particles called quarks and forcecarriers. Electrons are particles called leptons. 12. Watching the “Animals” Move • You will need these materials: • Partner • Flashlight • Piece of clear plastic optical fiber • Follow these directions: • Shine the flashlight into one end of the fiber. • Look at the other end. What do you see? • Now twist the fiber any way you want to and shine the light in one end. What do you see at the other end? (Do not bend the fiber completely.) 20. How do we see the “animals”? • You will need these materials: • One shoe box lid, turned upside down • Cups to hold the shoe box lid up • Magnetic marbles • Ordinary marbles • Iron filings • Follow these directions: • 1. Place box lid upside down on the table and insert cups at each corner to raise it just enough so that any of your marbles can roll under it. • 2. Sprinkle iron filings in the lid so as to cover all of it. This is your simulated detector. • 3. Roll a magnetic marble rapidly under this simulated detector. What do you see? • 4. Roll an ordinary marble rapidly under this simulated detector. What do you see? Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics B. Beiersdorf – University of Notre Dame
