4. THE RHÔNE-ALPES REGION • in economic terms Rhône-Alpes is France’s second largest region, after the Paris area with 5.65 million inhabitants (equivalent to Denmark or Finland), • the tenth among the largest European regions. • an area of 43 700 km², comparable to Switzerland or the Netherlands

5. Grenoble, the largest urban area in the French Alps, boasts a unique mountain setting and through the centuries has made its marks as a pioneering city open to the world.
