  1. Will God Really Sort People? Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43, 47-50 Pages 1518 - 1519

  2. Through The Summer: • Object lessons, similar to how Jesus used parables.

  3. What Truth Are We Dealing With? • God is able to sort the lost from the saved in a way that makes sure that both go to where they belong.

  4. Half-Truths and Lies: • We do not know what happens when we die so it is no use thinking about it. • People who have had near death experiences describe peace and calmness not sorrow or fear. • God is a God of love and a loving God would not send anyone to hell. • I planned on accepting God’s grace in the way that He said but I did not get around to it. • If God saved the criminal on the cross he could offer to save me as well. • God’s grace covers all sin and all sinners. • You will have time to turn to God at the end of your life.

  5. Half-Truths and Lies: • Jesus paid for all sins so no one will receive punishment. • Since everyone is a sinner, or possibly born with sin, it would be unethical for God to punish anyone. • If I did not know what God said I would not be held accountable. • Salvation is a matter of the conscience and a good heart not a work like being baptized. • I did what I thought was right and God knows my intentions. • I committed myself to God at one point of my life so I cannot be lost. • What other thoughts go along with these?

  6. What Is The Object Part? • 2 Volunteers for a safe and clean task.

  7. Matthew 13:24-30 Page 1518 • Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. • Now What Can He Do?

  8. Matthew 13:24-30 Page 1518 • “Where does the evil come from and why doesn’t God just remove it right away?” • MT 13:27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, `Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ MT 13:28 “ `An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, `Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

  9. Matthew 13:24-30 Page 1518 • 29 " `No,' he answered, `because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. • What is the owners plan? Does he just accept a few weeds? Does he loose a few wheat? When does he act, and how will he react to the weeds? • 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.' "

  10. Matthew 13:36-43 Page 1518 • Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field." • MT 13:37 He answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

  11. Matthew 13:36-43 Page 1519 • Then Jesus explains the part about the weeds, not the wheat! • MT 13:40 "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. • Then what happens to everything that causes sin and those who do evil? • 42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  12. Matthew 13:43 Page 1519 • And what about those in the kingdom? • 43 Then the righteous [those who have been made right with God] will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

  13. Check In Time! • How are you doing with your sorting? • What do you think of the task that you have been given?

  14. Also in Matthew 13 • The next parable that we are going to read is in the same chapter and it follows the parables of the hidden treasure and an exceptional pearl speaking of the value, cost, and priority of entering the kingdom.

  15. Matthew 13:47-50 on page 1519 • "Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore.

  16. Matthew 13:47-50 on page 1519 • Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  17. Back to the Sorters: • How well did you do with the task that you were given? • How would you rate the difficulty of the task? • Can I get a judge to come and check the two plates and give me a percentage of separation?

  18. My Turn? • Do you think that I could do the same task faster with a higher percentage of success? • The task can seem impossible because we go about it the wrong way.

  19. God’s Sorting: • When God judges us he does so with perfect knowledge, recollection, holiness, love, and grace. • He knows that we need perfection to be with Him for eternity so He provides it through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. • He is our filter of perfection and no impurity can be in him.

  20. My Turn! • Let’s see if I can do a better job of sorting the salt from the pepper?

  21. God Knows! • God knows those who are in His son and those who are not and at the end of our time on earth, or the end of time completely, He will have His angels sort us out. • Today is the day to make a choice that affects your eternity.

  22. For the Falling: • If you have been falling away from God, now is the time to consider the value, cost, and priority of the kingdom. Repent and come back to God while there is time.

  23. If you have not entered into Christ through your death to the old life, burial in water connecting you with the blood of Jesus to remove your sins, and resurrection to a life focused on knowing God and making Him known then make that choice soon because right now you are with the weeds and will be cast out of the net.

  24. Next Week: • The value of community in keeping your faith afloat.
