  1. Industrial Revolution Thinkers Utilitarian's, Socialism, Utopians, Robert Owen, Karl Marx

  2. Utilitarian's • Believe that the goal of society is to provide the “greatest happiness to the greatest number” of people. • Laws should be based on the idea “Do these laws provide more happiness or more pain?” • Felt that government should step in and improve the conditions of peoples lives • Wanted to give the power to vote to workers and women in order to pass reforms in the areas of child labor and public health

  3. Socialism • Believes that governments main goal should be to “end poverty and injustice” • The people as a collective (not private business owners) would own and operate the “means of production” that produce and distribute goods • Born out of the Enlightenment idea that people are naturally good • “There will be no war, no crime, no administration of justice, as it is called, no government. Besides there will be neither disease, anguish, melancholy, nor resentment. Every man will seek the good of all.” -Unknown

  4. Utopians • Based off the Socialist movement • The idea of a self sufficient community where all work was shared and all property was owned by all people. (no possessions) • There would be no difference between the rich and the poor and felt that fighting between groups of people would cease

  5. Robert Owen • Started out as a poor welsh boy who became a successful mill owner • Refused to use child labor and encouraged labor unions • Insisted that the conditions in which people lived had a direct effect on their character • Set up a factory • Built a school and homes for his workers to attend and live in • Showed that a business owner could offer decent living and working conditions and still make a substantial profit

  6. Karl Marx • Marx and Engels wrote the “Communist Manifesto” • Created a form of socialism that sees class struggle between employers and employees as inevitable • Business owners (people who control wealth) = Bourgeoisie • Workers (the people desperate for wealth) = Proletariat • Marx predicted a world revolution to “Communism” by the year 1900 • Russian Revolution 1917
