  2. Symbolism is Pasternak’s Instrument… …TO mirror the human qualities of ongoing CHANGElife, death, resurrection, and rebirth during the turmoil of 20th century Russia The novel is set between 1901 & 1943, a period of intense turbulence involving the buildup of political unrest, economic instability, and social conflict This volatile atmosphere inspired many great Russian works including Tolstoy’s War and Peace, a major influence on Pasternak’s literary career Shruti Sirohi

  3. Doctor Zhivago is not a novel but rather a “kind of autobiography” of the poet’s inner life, in which the hero is “not an active agent but a window…” ShrutiSirohi

  4. Symbolism Objects Biblical References • The wild duck (irony of the role of spokesmen for the inarticulate soldiers of the revolution) • The Weather (storms) ex: funeral • Shadows • Trains • Art as eternal(poetry on next slide) • Yuri and Lara • Sleep and Resurrection Shruti Sirohi

  5. Poems and their Significance Bad Roads in Spring Winter Night • Symbolizes Zhivago’s capture by the guerillas • Poem show this as unavoidable and necessary…shows that the war affected all parts of individual lives including their personal lives • Symbolic nightingale • Snowflakes • Crossing of fates • Crucifixion of love Shruti Sirohi

  6. Conclusion • A trial of this nature is by no means limited by a search through the arts and letters but engages the whole man. "This is, " writes Pasternak, “why people write symphonies, and why they discover mathematical infinity and electromagnetic waves" (p. 19). “ Shruti Sirohi

  7. Comments Beautiful presentation. Well thought out Sound understanding. Could do with a little elaboration on the politics of the day and the feelings of the ‘intelligentsia’!!!! What in your opinion connects your end slide comments with what Boris Pasternak desired through his novel? Is your personal reaction to the novel positive or negative? Do the symbols present any ambiguities? Presentation lasted 13 mins. Extracts from the two poem cited could have been included to make your presentation much more effective. More of personal responses to the symbolism involved desired. Bulleted points can be followed by criticism, both positive & negative. Excellent travail, ma fille. Je suis impressionné
