  1. FUEL SAVING TECHNIQUES David Popwell, Yancey Bros. Co.

  2. How important is minimizing fuel usage?

  3. Historical Fuel Costs

  4. Fuel costs in perspective • Fuel costs are the highest operating costs for your machines. • Fuel costs can exceed the original purchase price over the life of the machine. • At $4 per gallon, the fuel costs are 30% - 35% of the total of the purchase price and the operating costs of the machine over a 10 year period. • Engine and power train life is most closely related to fuel burned.

  5. Machine Application & Fuel Usage

  6. Overview of FuelSaving Techniques • Machine Systems • Site Layout • Operator Techniques • Machine Configuration • Proper Fleet & Fleet Match • Machine Maintenance

  7. Machine Systems Available • Idle management • Idle shutdown • Economy mode on trucks • VSC on 980H • Fuel management system on 988H • Throttle lock and impellor clutch • Product Link • TPMS on trucks

  8. Site Layout • Haul road design - avoid steep grades and grade changes. • Haul road maintenance - keep roads smooth and firm.

  9. Operator Techniques • Throttle lock and impellor clutch on loaders. • Proper loading of the bucket. • Proper spotting of trucks. • Avoiding overloading trucks. • Selecting the proper gear on trucks.

  10. Configuring the Machine • Proper bucket & GET. • Proper tires. • Lockup clutch and ride control for load and carry.

  11. Proper Fleet & Fleet Match • The loader should be matched to the crusher. • The trucks should be matched to the loader. • The optimum number of trucks should be used.

  12. Machine Maintenance • Proper tire inflation. • Keeping air filters clean. • Using proper oil and changing at proper intervals

  13. Final Measurement What is your fleet fuel cost per ton of material produced?
