  2. BACKGROUND AND PROBLEM STATEMENT • Background of organization/ business or issue (When established, history etc) • Link background to problem • Reputable source of problem • Should answer the following questions What am going to do? Why am going to do it? Why is it worth doing it?

  3. QUESTIONS/ AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The background should lead to • Research question/ • Research Aim/ • Research objectives Three (3) aims/ questions or objectives

  4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS STUDY Who will benefit from the study? Such as • Individual • Teams • Organisations • Society • Government • Policy makers

  5. DELIMITATION OF THIS STUDY The boundary set by the researcher. • Specific organisation • Population

  6. LIMITATIONS OF THIS STUDY • Limitations are influences that the researcher cannot control. They are short comings, conditions or influences that cannot be controlled by the researcher. Consider the following • Your analysis • the nature of self responding • the instrument you utilized • the sample • time constraints

  7. ORGANISATION OF THIS STUDIES What the reader can expect to read in: • Chapter 2 • Chapter 3

  8. LITERATURE REVIEW • Theoretical or conceptual framework • Critically review literature to provide evidence/ answers to research questions objectives or aims. • Literature can be obtained from: • academic journals, Magazines, Books, Conference proceedings, Reports, Theses, dissertations.

RESEARCH DESIGN Research design is a plan of how you will go about • Answering your research questions. • To collect data and analyses data's Three designs are available: • Quantitative – numerical data (numbers) • Qualitative – Non- numerical data ( words, images, etc.) • Mix Methods – combination of quantitative and qualitative elements

  10. POPULATION AND SAMPLING Population Population is complete set of cases or group members. Sampling Subgroup or parts of a larger population. Sampling Technics • Probability sampling Simple random, systematic sampling, stratified random, cluster, multi – stage. • Non – probability sampling Quota , purposive, volunteer (snowball and self – selection) Haphazard (convenient)

  11. VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY • Reliability refers to the application and consistency to reduce bias. • Validity refers to the appropriateness of the measure used. • Types of validity Internal validity, external validity

DATA INSTRUMENTS, COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS • Qualitative Methods: Interviews, observations, focus group discussion, open-ended questionnaires, interviews Analysis: Thematic analysis, Template analysis, Explanation Building and testing, Grounded Theory method, Discourse analysis, Content analysis, Narrative Analysis • Quantitative Method: Closed-ended questionnaires Analysis: SPSS(graphs, histograms, bar graphs)

  13. DATA PRESENTATION • Quantitative: display in graphs, histograms, bar charts, • Qualitative: display in explanations
