Irony refers to the contrast between what people say and what they actually mean.
Example of Irony? • It would be ironic for a police officer to lose his drivers license because of unpaid parking tickets.
Example of Irony? • The Titanic was promoted as being 100% unsinkable, but it sank on it’s maiden voyage.
Example of Irony? In Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Romeo kills himself because he thinks Juliet is dead, but in fact, she is just sleeping. When Juliet wakes and finds Romeo dead, she then kills herself.
On the other hand… Satire refers to comments that exaggerate flaws or failings for the purpose of making them seem ridiculous.
Why use satire? • Satire seems mean, so why would we use it? • It creates a SHOCK of recognition to spur action!
