  2. THE GREAT ROOM • Why is it so “great”? • The great roomprovides a large, unified space that combines functions of a family room, living room, and dining room all in one.

  3. THE GREAT ROOM • Great rooms can take up to 10-15% of a home’s total square footage. • Sizes can range anywhere from 400-600square feet.

  4. RECREATION ROOMS • FUNCTIONS • Designed specifically for active play, exercise, recreation, and hobbies • Can sometimes overlap the family room • Can be divided into 2 areas • Active area – billiards, ping pong, darts • Quiet area – knitting, model building, drawing

  5. RECREATION ROOMS • LOCATION • What is an ideal location for a recreation room? • Away from quiet areas of the house • Often located on the ground level (next to the kitchen/garage) • Can be located in the basement as well

RECREATION ROOMS • SIZE and SHAPE • Dependent on whether the recreation room is located on the ground level or basement • If on basement, be aware of laundry area, utilities, and working areas • Also dependent on how many people will use the recreation room at any given time as well as the type and size of furniture/equipment • Average size = 12’ X 20’ (130 to 300 sq. ft) • Larger size = 32’ X 18’ (300+ sq. ft)

RECREATION ROOMS • DÉCOR • Active/informal atmosphere • Fun, bright colors • Unconventional furniture (beanbag chairs) and fixtures (lava lamps) • Design creativity and originality • Walls, floors, ceilings should follow same decoration guidelines as the family room (resistance to abuse, keep noise in)
